Die Zellen auf der Haut sind nicht vollständig verhornt, was dazu führt, dass die Haut aufgrund von Feuchtigkeitsverlust trocken ist. Mit der Zeit bilden sich trockene Schuppen, die schließlich zu tiefen Rissen führen. Der obere Rand der Nase ist betroffen, während andere Teile der Haut normal entwickelt sind. Die auf der Nase gebildeten Krusten verursachen normalerweise keine Schmerzen. HNPK wurde bei Greyhounds und Labrador Retrievern berichtet, obwohl unterschiedliche Mutationen im selben Gen für die Entwicklung der HNPK verantwortlich sind. Klinische Symptome sind bei Greyhounds und Labrador Retrievern vergleichbar. HNPK ist derzeit unheilbar, trotz der Existenz einiger topischer Anwendungsmittel, die die Symptome lindern.
