Dieses neue, grossformatige Buch zeichnet erstmals die Familien und Firmengeschichte nach und stellt das ingenieurtechnische Schaffen der beiden vor.

Die Brüder Ernst Schmidt (1914–1990) und Albert Schmidt (1923–2007) sind zwei wichtige Persönlichkeiten des schweizerischen Ingenieurbaus. Ausgehend von Ernsts seit 1948 tätigem 'Bureau für Baukonstruktionen und baustatische Modellversuche' gründeten sie 1955 in Basel die Firma E. und A. Schmidt, Ingenieure. Dieses neue, grossformatige Buch zeichnet erstmals die Familien- und Firmengeschichte nach und stellt das ingenieurtechnische Schaffen der beiden vor. Üppig illustriert mit zahlreichen grossformatigen Plänen, technischen Zeichnungen und umfassendem Fotomaterial, ist das Buch eine Augenweide für alle an Ingenieurkunst Interessierten. Besonderes Augenmerk widmet das Buch dem Brückenbau, bei dem die Brüder Schmidt durch den sogenannten Freivorbau Pionierarbeit geleistet haben. Die technischen und konstruktiven Aspekte werden anhand der zahlreichen Brücken, deren Bau sie als Ingenieure betreut haben, eingehend vorgestellt – von der Johanniterbrücke und der Schwarzwaldbrücke in Basel bis zur Rheinbrücke Köln Deutz und zum Rheinübergang Strohmeyersdorf in Konstanz. Neben den Brücken werden aber auch weitere bedeutende Schmidt-Bauten vorgestellt, zum Beispiel die Sporthalle St. Jakob in Basel.
