Najat Abdul Samad erzählt in ihrem Roman 'Kein Wasser stillt ihren Durst' vom Leben der drusischen Gesellschaft in der südsyrischen Provinz und gleichnamigen Stadt Suwaida.  Aus der Perspektive einer Frau, die sich gegen die gesellschaftlichen Traditionen auflehnt und dafür zur Strafe in die Kellerkammer ihres Elternhauses gesperrt wird, berichtet die Autorin über Bräuche, Traditionen und Mythen der Drusen. Diese Religionsgemeinschaft, die heute in Südsyrien, im Libanon, auf den syrischen, von Israel besetzten Golanhöhen sowie in geringer Zahl in Jordanien beheimatet ist, hatte sich im 11. Jahrhundert von der ismailitischen Schia abgespalten, schlug dann aber eine eigene Entwicklung ein. So etwa glauben die Drusen an die Seelenwanderung und interpretieren den Koran anders als Sunniten und Schiiten. Auch eine Konversion zum Drusentum ist nicht möglich, da alles von Gott vorbestimmt ist.  Der Roman gibt Einblick in die verschiedenen Traditionen und Bräuche dieser Religionsgemeinschaft und schildert in Rückblicken nicht nur die Liebesgeschichte der beiden Protagonisten Hayat und Nasser, sondern auch die geologische Geschichte der Region, in der Wasser und ausbleibende Regenfälle die Entwicklung des Landes beeinflussten. Der klimatische Wandel erschwerte zunehmend den Landbau der fruchtbaren Region und führte trotz Einsatz von moderner Technik und Wissenschaft dazu, dass nachwachsende Generationen das Regenfeldbaugebiet verließen. Passagen aus der oralen Erzähltradition, die einzelnen Kapiteln im Buch vorangestellt sind, geben zudem einen beklemmenden Einblick in das Leben der Frauen, die sich den von Männern geprägten Traditionen unterordnen müssen. First off, I have to say that my husband and I know Angela, the author. We met her because she is a neighbor of my sister, living in Hawaii. We discovered that she planned to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela the same year we were (2016) ! On a visit to Hawaii, we met with Angela and did a little local hike together. She was so enthusiastic and had prepared well. We, too, had been reading up and watching videos, getting suggestions as to what to bring, how to deal with physical issues and weather, what to pack and what not to pack, etc. Still, for anyone doing the Camino - whether the WHOLE 500 miles or doing the required 100 km to get the certificate at the final destination: Santiago de Compostela, Spain - it is a very personal endeavor. Reading Angela Leslee's book gives you the personal story of her "camino," and it is captivating. The changes that take place in her life - the discoveries she makes, the people she meets, the failures she feels, the fears, the habits that get broken (such as food choices!) - all make for an adventure that is life-changing and an interesting read. For anyone considering this pilgrimage, because that's what it is, this book will inspire you. You don't need to be part of a "group." You don't need a lot of plans. You do need to be prepared to be changed. The memory for myself and my husband is that it is the best shared experience we have had together in our 50 years of marriage! Angela's book brought back so many wonderful memories for us. I highly recommend this book.
