COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Teaching Adults with Learning Difficulties course. This program has been designed to equip you with the knowledge, instructional approaches, diagnostic awareness and adaptive teaching strategies required to support adult learners experiencing challenges in reading, writing, numeracy, comprehension, communication, cognition, memory, motor skills, organisation and overall learning performance. This program provides a detailed foundation for understanding the full spectrum of difficulties adults may face, the signs that indicate these challenges, and the strategies required to create successful learning experiences.

This course begins by examining the wide range of reading difficulties that adult learners may experience. This section addresses slow, hesitant reading, reading in syllables, lack of expression, misunderstanding punctuation, difficulties decoding meaning, forgetting parts of sentences, challenges with particular sounds, limited vocabulary, confusion about number reading, lack of understanding of digit place value, errors interpreting decimal positions, and difficulty linking text to mathematical language. This section also explains how decoding without comprehension occurs and how to address these issues through tailored reading interventions.

The next learning area focuses on writing and text production challenges encountered by adult learners. This section explores difficulties with generating sentences, writing from dictation, adding or omitting words, substituting words, forgetting parts of sentences, producing disorganised written work, showing evidence of smudging associated with left-handedness, chaotic mathematical writing, and incorrect use of mathematical symbols. This section also examines challenges related to summarising text, coherence of ideas, poor handwriting, grammar and spelling difficulties, and the learner’s struggle to check and correct their own work.

The next learning area examines foundational numeracy and mathematical learning difficulties among adults. This section covers problems writing numbers, mastering the four basic operations, understanding fractions, solving real-life numeracy problems, performing mental calculations, orienting in space, and navigating the conventions of mathematical notation. This section also explains how fatigue, slow processing, limited numeracy conceptualisation and disorganised thinking patterns can interfere with the learner’s ability to engage confidently with mathematical tasks.

The next learning area investigates memory, processing, cognitive load and learning stamina. This section explains challenges related to short-term and long-term memory, encoding and retention of information, recalling previously learned content, distinguishing similar sounds or words, following instructions, and maintaining focus during conversations or presentations. This section also explores how mental fatigue develops, how learners tire easily during cognitive tasks, how difficulty distinguishing jokes from serious messages affects comprehension, and how problems with perception and discrimination disrupt overall learning performance.

The next learning area focuses on communication skills, speech difficulties and conversational participation. This section covers problems with pronunciation, articulation, stuttering, producing coherent messages, participating logically in conversations, limited vocabulary, syntactic errors, incorrect language borrowing, difficulty deciphering nonverbal cues and challenges responding appropriately in verbal exchanges. This section also explores the adult learner’s lack of exposure to the basic structure of oral presentations and provides strategies for strengthening speech confidence and communication competence.

The next learning area explores behavioural, organisational and motor-skill challenges that affect learning outcomes. This section addresses impulsivity, apathy, disorganised work habits, an inability to self-regulate, difficulty applying recommendations, inconsistent checking of work, signs of hypertonia or hypotonia, slow work speed, chaotic approach to tasks, and difficulty organising materials. This section also examines the learner’s struggle to adopt internal self-regulation language, the presence of fatigue, limited problem-solving strategies, and the influence of cognitive, behavioural and emotional barriers on academic progress.

The next learning area provides insights into how adults learn and how to design effective instruction. This section explains how learning occurs, the steps of the learning process, the role of short-term and long-term memory, how to boost memory, common misconceptions about learning, and the importance of using structured teaching methods that respond to diverse needs. This section also integrates strategies relating to motivation, learning-by-doing, case studies, visual support, structured messages, innovative teaching, clear learning objectives, and the development of skills needed to support adults with complex learning profiles.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand the full range of challenges adults may experience while learning, identify the underlying causes of their difficulties, apply structured teaching strategies tailored to each learner’s needs, support reading, writing, numeracy, communication and cognitive development, strengthen memory and processing skills, implement behavioural and organisational supports, and design effective learning environments that promote success, confidence and meaningful improvement for adult learners with diverse learning difficulties.

A simple but useful little gadget
I love my little galley kitchen which really only has one wall as it is open to the family room and dining room. So no available wall space meant no place to install towel bars. That meant there was no space to hang up my dish towels to dry. These towel bars were the solution to that little (but daily) annoyance. They attached easily and securely to my cabinet drawers. I am very pleased with them.

Great Towel Rack
This is a replacement for a similar towel rack. It looked exactly the same, but welds failed after a number of years. This one is designed much better. It is adjustable the other was not. Very clean looking and expect this to last at least as long as the other or longer. My wife loves it.

Sturdy but hard to use
This bar is sturdy and doesn't bend but the bars are too close together making it difficult to hang towels on. Pro: sturdy and quality made Con: hard to use

Perfect for my needs
I don’t have many towel racks in my bathrooms and they’re hard for me to reach because I’m disabled. I bought a couple of small over the door racks, but they’re too small for hand towels. I didn’t have high hopes for this adjustable rack, I thought it would uncouple and fall from the door. I’m pleased to say I was wrong. There appears to be a stopper keeping both sides in place. I like that it has 2 bars, I easily put my face towel on one and my hand towel on the other. If I have a complaint, I wish the whole unit was another inch longer.

Perfect fit & couldn't be easier to install
Even though I measured I wasn't sure about the size or how the extending would work. It works very well and seems to stay securely in place fully extended. The felt pads are a nice touch and make sure it doesn't move around as you place & remove towels. It looks great. As far as people who've commented that the metal's a bit thin; well is a bit on the thin side but for kitchen towels I don't see that being an issue. I'm very happy with this purchase.
