Chelsea Wolfe’s album "Abyss" deliberately confronts the boundaries between dreams and reality to craft a score to that realm she describes as the “hazy afterlife… an inverted thunderstorm… the dark backward… the abyss of time.” As Wolfe notes “Abyss is meant to have the feeling of when you’re dreaming, and you briefly wake up, but then fall back asleep into the same dream, diving quickly into your own subconscious,”. To conjure this in-between world, Wolfe continued her ongoing collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and co-writer Ben Chisholm and drummer Dylan Fujioka, with Ezra Buchla brought on board to play viola and Mike Sullivan (Russian Circles) enlisted to contribute guitar. The ensemble traveled to Dallas, TX to record with producer John Congleton (Swans, St. Vincent). In the back of her mind burned the words of designer Yohji Yamamoto: "Perfection is ugly. Somewhere in the things humans make, I want to see scars, failure, disorder, distortion.” The resulting eleven songs reflect that philosophy as they smolder with human frailty, intimacy, quiet passion, anxiety, and deep longing. Due to what I was storing it did not shrink very flat, but compared to the size of the memory foam it shrunk a lot and will definitely save space! I’ve tried so many different versions of these vacuum storage bags over the years, and this company seems to have finally figured it out. It also has a stop valve built in, which prevents air from escaping when you remove the pump to put the cap back on. Such a smart design improvement over other brands I’ve used. I bought the medium 10-pack to store my winter clothes in two 66-quart storage bins, and they fit surprisingly well. That said, part of me wishes I had also picked up a few of the smaller sizes just because they’d probably make stacking and organizing even easier. Overall though, I’m really impressed with the quality and design.
