Fritz Waßmer Spätburgunder M
This Spätburgunder, which is simply named “M” as the middle size of the clothing racks, has become the most popular among Fritz Waßmer’s Pinot Noir wines because it has just a little more fullness and body than the fresh opening entry level wine and also because of the great price/quality ratio. This wine is created from 15-20 year old vines standing on the south and southeast facing slopes on the so-called Kleinterassen near Herbolzheim and on Bienenberg near Malterdingen.
The harvest is manual and the fruit is taken to the winery in Bad Krozingen in small plastic crates. Here, all stems are removed before the grapes are easily crushed and allowed to develop aromas for a short time. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, then aged for 12 months in used Burgundy casks before being filtered and bottled. A richly balanced Spätburgunder with more references to Burgundy than the majority of the red wines produced in Alsace a few kilometers away. Very mild, delicate and slightly less sweet in its aromas than so many other Spätburgunder wines from Baden. Nice concentration with notes of red raspberries and pickled strawberries that play well with cedar and black olives on a base of firm tannins.
Tasting Notes
Smooth and refined with an abundance of aromas of dark fruits such as cherry and blueberry, spicy nuance. The palate is clear, fresh and has very fine tannins, accompanied by dark fruits and some fennel. Very nice balance, refreshing and fruity with finesse, a certain flowery and understatement. A pleasure.
