Comprehensive Unit
57 pages
Grade Level: Middle School – High School
Includes curriculum unit + CD-ROM

Mapping Latin America has been designed to serve three purposes. First, the unit acts as an introduction to, or review of, fundamental geographical concepts and vocabulary. Second, it teaches students about the basic physical and political geography of Latin America. Third, students will learn to examine maps with a critical eye towards political and technical limitations. Students are future world citizens who need geography skills taught within the context of international education. These lessons are intended to introduce the basic geography competencies which can then be applied to any world region.

Mapping Latin America contains seven lessons. These could effectively be taught sequentially in two weeks (50-minute periods), or each self-contained lesson could be taught independently. Although some lessons depend on knowledge from prior lessons in order for students to be able to accomplish the tasks involved, many lessons could be interchanged. For example, if students have questions about latitude and longitude after Lesson One, then Lesson Four could be taught immediately after Lesson One. Teacher discretion is advised. This unit will not require you to spend extra time for research or for collecting additional materials. Everything you need is right here.

Mapping Latin America begins with a review of basic world geography (Lesson One). Two "Map Hunt" activities follow, that actively engage students in a search for the countries and main physiographic features of Latin America (Lessons Two and Three). Students label maps with this information. Next, students learn or review the use of latitude and longitude by searching for major Latin American cities (Lesson Four). The following lesson introduces students to the complex nature of Latin American climate (Lesson Five), and later students learn to examine the limitations of making flat representations of the world (Lesson Six). Finally, students engage in a geographic pursuit in which they also review previously taught material (Lesson Seven).

While Mapping Latin America teaches many important skills and ideas, the unit is not exhaustive. Not addressed in this unit are the simple but important devices of "scale" and "legend" paramount for a good understanding of geography. In addition, many instructive maps such as linguistic and historical representations, among others, are missing from this unit. For this reason, included at the end of this unit is an annotated bibliography of resources on Latin American geography. This list includes both reference and classroom materials as well as ideas for possible lessons.

Cheaper than the supply house.
Size: 42'' x 28''
I used black pipe similar to this to build some shelves in my man cave. I went looking to build a studio desk and found that Lowe's wanted $8 per floor flange (~$96 just for flanges and not including the pipe, tees, or the other fittings). Even supply house dot com wanted $4 per flange (~$48, but was still missing the other parts AND they didn't offer them because of supply chain issues). For about $65, this was a great buy. Yes everything is greasy. This will be the case regardless of where you buy it. I used some gloves, shop towels, and acetone and it cleaned up easily. For a top, I used a pre-made countertop from Lowe's (~$100) and a 1x4 piece of poplar I had sitting around.

Pipes don't assemble square, nice stand though.
Size: 42'' x 28''
These arent standard SCH40 pipe for starters. Significantly lighter. Easier to move around and sturdy enough to support a table, but this isnt pipe. As such, when I threaded it together, it wasn't square. I was able to flatten it mostly, but I had to use a clamp to bend the assembled piping to sguare so it would attach to the table runners. It's fine, but it surprised me. It looks nice, and it provides plenty of support for the table. All good. Several folks complained that the pipes are oily. They are supposed to be to prevent rust. I wiped them down with a few cleaner wipes, and they are fine. Be aware that this doesn't come with instructions or the wood screws you may need for your table top.

Sturdy & Tuff going on 6 months +
Size: 28'' x 14'', Size: 28'' x 14''
I mounted a thick heavy piece of butcher block to these legs and made a desk. Easy to assemble and install. Mark the holes, pre drill pilot holes and screw them in. I will say I knew they were going to be greasy out of the box. They grease them in the factory to prevent rusting so just wipe them off with an old rag and your good to go. They haven’t felt wobbly or anything like that and butcher block is pretty heavy. I have to say I love them and much cheaper than buying from the hardware store. I’m thinking about building a second one and I would definitely purchase again. Again very sturdy and easy to assemble. People mad about the grease need to realize it’s done as an anti rust measure and it wipes right off and zero rust thus far.
