Intense ebony colour. The nose releases perfumes of Mediterranean bush, rosemary, laurel, pine needles, resin and pine nuts on a sea breeze background. Intense, full and smooth, it is a perfectly balanced with a touch of alcohol. Rich in shades of grass and ripe stonefruit with a strong clean finish bringing a hint of minerality.

With Second World War in full swing, able men were all at the front while, in the countryside, young boys and retired men were working to help families survive. Due to the available workforce, production was quite limited. Despite this, the government enforced the requisition of foodstuffs, with the immediate result being the birth of the black market. Consequently, it became necessary to hide the real production of various goods.

Exchanged in wooden containers with a capacity of 50 litres, wine was hidden among shrubs in the countryside. In Sardinia, helichrysum shrubs were used. That idea worked well during the cold months, but during the summer the wine acquired not only the helichrysum scent but also a high alcohol content and a strong bitter note. That became a serious problem because nobody wanted such a bitter product.

Despite people’s best efforts, it wasn’t possible to understand what happened at the time. The smuggled wine continued to be exchanged, but during winter months only. Later on, it was possible to understand that this characteristic was caused by storing the wine in chestnut barrels. This wood is very large and, during the summer when water was evaporating through transpiration, the alcohol content was increasing causing the wine to get the intense scent of the helichrysum plants.

After the war and with the economic recovery in Sardinia, as in the rest of Italy, the trend of Vermouth got a foothold. While tasting it, Silvio Carta remembered what happened with the smuggled wine. He realised that the difference was simply in the addition of sugar.

That’s how the idea of producing Vermouth from the Vernaccia wine following the ancient recipe originated, creating a truly unique product in its class.

These shoes make a great first impression, but beware of the stingy toe box.
Size: 13.5 Wide Big Kid, Color: Black/Orange
These shoes make a good first impression. They look sharp and appear to be well-made for running shoes. They also get bonus points for having actual laces instead of the common velco/fake laces combo. However, my son struggled to get them on at first due to limited room in the toe box. He has wide feet as well as high arches and the shoes were very snug across the top of his foot initially. Once he got them on, we determined that they were both wide enough (which is a rarity in itself) and the right size – just tight across the top. I actually had to remove the insoles to get them on his feet at first. After a few minutes I tried again with the insoles and he wore them around the house for a few hours, at which point the upper material had relaxed and/or the footbed had started to take on the shape of his foot, in effect creating more wiggle room. By then he didn't want to take them off, so they must have gotten more comfortable after that brief break-in period. If they were still too tight I'm sure he would have complained. I'll update the review if the shoes wear out prematurely or there is anything else noteworthy to report.

Sole separation
Size: 3 Big Kid, Color: Black/Orange, Size: 3 Big Kid, Color: Black/Orange
I really dont like to write reviews, let alone a negative one. Have had the shoe 1 month and the out sole on both shoes are peeling up. Normally we have had great success with saucony shoes for my boys. But this one we haven't had good luck. I have been super gluing the soles back down everything they peal up. Hopefully this is just a 1 off incident. Both side of one shoe and a large chunk of the heal on the other. You can see the glue marks and separation in pictures.
