How to plant your lotus
Lotus should be planted in warm weather when the days and nights are consistently warm. Plant your lotus in a wide, shallow, no holes container using loam soil. Fill the container 2/3 full with loam soil. Dig a shallow trench across the surface of the soil. Place the lotus tuber in the trench, taking care not to break or damage the growth tips. Gently cover the tuber with an inch or two of soil while leaving the growth tips exposed. Gently add 3 - 4 inches of water above the soil and place in a sunny area outdoors. Lotus need 8 - 12 hours of sunlight daily. Do not fertilize until you have aerial leaves growing out of the water.
How and when to fertilize your lotus
Once you have aerial leaves growing out of the water, it is time to fertilize your lotus. We recommend 'Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs' for optimum growth, best bloom and ease of use. Simply press the tabs into the soil near the roots of your lotus plant, taking care not to damage the roots. Do this from June through September, making September the final fertilizer application for the year.
