ACCURATE MEASUREMENT:

This all-rounder Diesel Engine Compression Test kit covers the vast majority of modern diesel engines fitted to most vehicles.  The 16 piece kit is used to identify worn valves and piston rings.  It includes adaptors for most diesel engines - cars, trucks and tractors, and the easy to read dial gives an accurate measurement of individual cylinder pressures up to a maximum of 70 Bar pressure.

ENGINE COMPRESSION TESTING:

Engine compression should be checked when an engine is running roughly or is lacking power. Most manufacturers recommend a compression test be performed every time a tune-up is done as part of preventative maintenance.  Consult your vehicle owner's manual for tune-up intervals.

IDENTIFY BAD VALVES/ WORN PISTON RINGS:

By performing a compression test, internal engine malfunctions, such as bad valves, piston rings or excessive carbon buildup, can be detected before they cause irreparable damage.

What is a Compression Test?

A compression test is a mechanical test carried out to assess the working condition of an engine.  It is one of the most frequently performed tests used to determine engine health.  It is essential that it be performed when the following symptoms present themselves: unexplained loss of power, rough idle, engine miss or a puffing noise in induction or exhaust.  It is also recommended that a test be performed after performing an engine tune up.

Quickly Identify Compression Issues:

The compression pressure values should be measured on all cylinders using the compression gauge.  The results should then be compared against eachother and against the manufacturer's specifications for that engine type.

Accurate Compression Measurement:

This procedure will provide a very accurate indication of current engine condition.  If the recorded cylinder pressure value is lower than the expected value indicated by the manufacturer then pressure is escaping out of the combustion chamber.

What Causes Low Engine Compression?

WORN PISTON RINGS - A common cause of lost compression is the wearing of piston rings over time.   Wearing of rings can prevent a secure seal forming between the ring and cylinder.  Referred to as "Blow-By" the problem occurs when a fraction of the combusting air-fuel mixture, under high pressure, escapes past the pistons and travels along the cylinder walls to the crank case.  This escaped combustion represents lost power as it should have been pressing down against the piston and generating engine power.  It also causes an issue of oil contamination as the byproducts of combustion are entering the crank case and degenerating the engine oil.

CARBON DEPOSIT FORMATION ON INTAKE VALVES - The accumalation of carbon deposits on the valves or valve seats can negatively impact the ability of the valves to close correctly.  An insufficiently closed valve will lose air as it performs the compression stroke resulting in a sub-optimal compression ratio and a loss of engine power.   A knock on effect of this scenario is called "back firing".  This occurs when the air and fuel mixture bypasses the intake valve during combustion.  Also, note that the exhaust valves must be able to close securely to deliver an effective compression ratio.

TIMING CHAIN OR BELT HAS JUMPED - Valve timing has been disrupted. The chain or belt has become worn and loose and it has jumped over the teeth.

PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE - This can be caused by a number of issues, for example - broken valves, damaged pistons, etc.

BURNED VALVE - The heat generated by combustion has damaged the face of the valve.

TROUBLE WITH THE VALVE - Often caused by adjustments resulting in insufficient valve clearance which prevents the valve from fully closing as designed.  Can also be caused by damage to valve parts, eg: the valve spring, retainer or seal.

RUPTURED HEAD GASKET - Simple, the head gasket has been ruptured.

VALVED SEAT BURNED - The heat caused during combustion has dmaged the cylinder head seat.

Good looking toy that has held up well
Style: Coyote, Style: Coyote
Very durable toy that our little dog especially loves. It's the perfect size for a small dog and she doesn't destroy toys anyway so it's been great. It does feel very durable though and would take our chewer a little while to get to it as well. I'm not sure it looks like a coyote but the dogs don't seem to mind. It's an attractive toy that looks great and is constructed well so it's not like a slobbery mess when left out. Good value for the money and would make a great gift because it looks higher quality than most toys.

May be ballistic nylon, but the seams are flimsy.
Style: Gator, Style: Gator
I really wanted my pup to like this toy because it looks great and feels solid at first. The design is fun, the material seems tough, and it definitely gives the impression that it can handle some rough play. Unfortunately, that didn’t turn out to be the case at all. After just about 5 minutes of play, the top seam split open and stuffing started coming out. This wasn’t even extreme chewing, just normal play, and it failed almost immediately. As you can see in the photos, the tear happened right along the top seam, which is exactly where you’d expect a toy to be reinforced. Once it opened up, the toy was essentially done. For something marketed as ballistic nylon, this was really disappointing. It might be fine for very gentle dogs, but if your dog has even moderate chewing habits, this likely won’t last. Based on my experience, I wouldn’t recommend it. especially at 19.99 which is the price at time of my review, I feel it does not offer good value for money.

A Surprisingly Tough Favorite for All Four of My Dogs
Style: Armadillo, Style: Armadillo
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Hound 2.0 stuffed armadillo toy, but it has been a total hit in my house. Neither the dogs nor I have managed to find the squeaker yet—so it’s either missing or extremely well hidden—but honestly, the dogs don’t seem to care at all. They love this thing. I have four dogs ranging from a 22 lb Boston Terrier to an 85 lb pitbull, plus two medium Blue Heelers in between, and this toy has been thoroughly tested by every size and play style. I was a little unsure whether they’d like the harder “shell” portion of the armadillo, but they actually love it. It gives the toy a unique texture and makes it feel more durable. Before this, I knew nothing about the Hound 2.0 brand, but I’m a fan now. My little Boston Terrier is notorious for ripping every toy he touches, and this armadillo has stood up to him like a champ. The tag said it was made for outdoor play, wrestling, and chewing—and that’s absolutely true. I haven’t taken it outside yet, but inside it has survived rough play from all four dogs and still looks brand new. I also love that each toy in this line is a different animal with the hard parts in different places. It makes them feel unique instead of just the same toy in different shapes. I’ll definitely be buying more of these. If you have a pup—big, small, or anywhere in between—I’d recommend giving this toy a try. It’s been a winner in my multi‑dog home.

Unique armadillo design
Style: Armadillo
I love the look of this armadillo toy. The flexible rubber shell gives it a spiky texture. It has reinforced nylon seams and printed eyes. The feet allow the toy to stand on its own, daring dogs to come knock it over. With a body length of 12" and standing 5" tall, the toy is of good size for even larger dogs, but it intimidated my 8lb yorkie mix. She found the hard shell and spikes off-putting and not fun. The toy is supposed to squeak, but either mine was broken or buried too deep to be useful. This was disappointing because I think a squeak would have helped my pup engage with the toy because she can't resist a noisy toy. I'd recommend this armadillo for larger dogs than my tiny pup. It seems durable with that rubber shell around the body.

A hound's dream toy.
Size: Small, Style: Mallard Duck
I bought this for our "grandson"--a happy go lucky beagle--to play with while we were dogsitting. It took a while to motivate him to play with it, but eventually he caved... and then promptly proceeded to tear its insides out! I took a photo and sent it to my son, and he remarked, "Wow, it has been a long time since he played with a toy like that." So even an old hound past his prime enjoyed this toy. As for quality, this is a very well made toy. Yes, it's true that the dog ripped it to shreds, but that'll happen to any toy if the dog is determined enough. I was happy he enjoyed it. He also has two loofa dog toys here that he hardly ever touches, but this duck toy was too much for him to resist. My only suggestion is to supervise your dog while he plays with this. Besides the inner stuffing, the toy has a fuzzy surface to it, and you don't want him chewing a bunch of fuzz if he tears some out, as dogs are apt to do. Other than that, GREAT DOG TOY!
