The Joe Colombo Armchair (Model 4801) is one of Kartell’s most legendary and historically significant pieces. Designed by the visionary Joe Colombo in 1964, it is a sculptural masterpiece that bridges the gap between mid-century organic design and the space-age futurism that would define the late 1960s. To celebrate Kartell’s heritage, the armchair was re-released using modern industrial technology. It is now crafted from PMMA (acrylic glass), fulfilling Colombo’s original vision of a high-tech, plastic seating solution.The Joe Colombo armchair is composed of three d istinct interlocking elements that create a low, wide, and incredibly stable "throne." Its silhouette features a bold interplay of sharp angles and flowing, ergonomic curves. Even when not in use, the chair functions as a work of art, often appearing in major museum collections like the MoMA Museum. In its transparent version, the chair appears to float, allowing its complex structural joints to be visible from every angle. While it looks like a museum piece, the Joe Colombo Armchair is designed for actual living. Thanks to the PMMA c onstruction, the modern version is fully weather-resistant and can be used on terraces or in gardens.
