Harbeth P3ESR XD2 2-Way Stand-Mount Speakers at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The P3ESR XD2 is a stand-mount 2-way loudspeaker from Harbeth (Lindfield, England, United Kingdom), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Built around Harbeth's newly developed RADIAL4 110mm bass/midrange driver, the P3ESR XD2 covers a frequency range of 75Hz to 20kHz (±3dB) with a sensitivity of 83dB/2.83V/1m and works with amplifiers from as little as 15 watts per channel. The P3ESR XD2 is the latest and most refined iteration of one of Harbeth's most celebrated compact loudspeakers, combining the fourth-generation RADIAL4 cone material with an upgraded XD2 crossover network to deliver a level of clarity, imaging, and tonal accuracy that makes it one of the most advanced small stand-mount speakers available anywhere.

RADIAL4 Cone Technology: Maximum Resolution from a Compact Driver

The P3ESR XD2 is centred on a 110mm Harbeth-manufactured RADIAL4 bass/midrange drive unit, paired with a 19mm ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter. RADIAL4 is the fourth generation of Harbeth's proprietary diaphragm material science program, developed at the company's Lindfield, England facility through decades of internal polymer research. The challenge of fitting a RADIAL4 driver into a 110mm format is considerably greater than in the larger 200mm drivers used in the Monitor 30.3 XD2 and C7ES-3 XD2, as the smaller cone area must work harder to produce meaningful bass weight and dynamic range while maintaining the low coloration and midrange transparency that RADIAL4 is engineered to deliver. Harbeth's solution in the P3ESR XD2 is a driver optimised specifically for the compact cabinet's acoustic loading, with the RADIAL4 material's stiffness-to-mass ratio and low internal damping tuned to the physical constraints of the P3ESR enclosure. The result is a 110mm driver that performs with a degree of resolution, openness, and tonal accuracy well beyond what its physical size would suggest, anchoring a loudspeaker that is genuinely competitive at the highest levels of the compact stand-mount category.

Upgraded XD2 Crossover for Greater Depth and Clarity

The XD2 update brings a comprehensively redesigned crossover network to the P3ESR, reflecting Harbeth's ongoing investment in improving driver integration and overall sonic performance across the entire XD2 loudspeaker family. The new crossover topology applies improved component selection and revised filter slopes to reduce phase and amplitude irregularities at the handover point between the RADIAL4 bass/midrange driver and the 19mm dome tweeter. In a compact 2-way design where the crossover point falls squarely within the most audibly sensitive region of the frequency range, the precision of the crossover network has a profound effect on the perceived openness, imaging, and tonal coherence of the finished speaker. The upgraded XD2 crossover allows the P3ESR XD2 to present a more seamless, unified soundstage with greater perceived depth and improved clarity in the upper midrange and lower treble, making it more revealing of fine musical detail and more convincing in its reproduction of acoustic instruments and voices than the previous P3ESR XD.

Key Features

  • RADIAL4 110mm Bass/Midrange Driver: Harbeth's fourth-generation proprietary cone material delivers exceptional midrange transparency, low coloration, and tonal accuracy in a compact 110mm format specifically engineered for the P3ESR XD2 cabinet acoustic loading.
  • 2-Way Stand-Mount Configuration: A 110mm RADIAL4 bass/midrange driver and a 19mm ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter work together to cover 75Hz to 20kHz in one of the smallest handmade cabinet footprints in the Harbeth range.
  • Upgraded XD2 Crossover Network: A redesigned crossover improves phase coherence and amplitude integration between the two drivers, producing a more open, transparent, and tonally accurate presentation with greater perceived depth and imaging precision.
  • Works from 15 Watts Per Channel: The P3ESR XD2's compatibility with amplifiers from as little as 15 watts per channel makes it one of the most amplifier-friendly loudspeakers in the Harbeth range, suitable for low-powered tube amplifiers including single-ended triode designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Harbeth P3ESR XD2?

The Harbeth P3ESR XD2 is a stand-mount 2-way loudspeaker manufactured in Lindfield, England, featuring a 110mm RADIAL4 bass/midrange driver and a 19mm ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter, with a frequency range of 75Hz to 20kHz and compatibility with amplifiers from as little as 15 watts per channel. It is the latest generation of the P3ESR, one of Harbeth's most internationally acclaimed compact loudspeakers, updated with the fourth-generation RADIAL4 cone material and a redesigned XD2 crossover network. The P3ESR XD2 is widely regarded as one of the finest small stand-mount loudspeakers available at any price, offering a level of tonal accuracy, imaging precision, and musical resolution that far exceeds what its compact cabinet dimensions would suggest.

How does the Harbeth P3ESR XD2 compare to the Falcon Acoustics LS3/5A and the Graham Audio LS3/5?

The Harbeth P3ESR XD2, the Falcon Acoustics LS3/5A, and the Graham Audio LS3/5 all share a lineage rooted in the BBC's original LS3/5A compact monitor specification, but each pursues a different interpretation of that heritage. The Falcon Acoustics LS3/5A and the Graham Audio LS3/5 are direct recreations of the original BBC LS3/5A design, using polypropylene mid/bass drivers and ferrofluid-cooled tweeters that closely replicate the original driver specifications, with an intentionally warm and smooth tonal character that many long-term LS3/5A enthusiasts find deeply satisfying. The Harbeth P3ESR XD2 takes a different approach, replacing the original driver philosophy entirely with the RADIAL4 proprietary cone material and an updated crossover, resulting in a speaker that retains the compact footprint and easy-to-drive character of the LS3/5A tradition while delivering meaningfully greater midrange transparency, lower coloration, and more precise imaging than either the Falcon or Graham interpretations of the original design.

Can the Harbeth P3ESR XD2 be used with a low-powered single-ended tube amplifier?

Yes, the Harbeth P3ESR XD2 is one of the most suitable Harbeth loudspeakers for pairing with low-powered single-ended triode tube amplifiers. Its recommended minimum amplifier power of just 15 watts per channel makes it compatible with a wide range of SET amplifiers, including designs based on the 300B, 2A3, and EL34 output tubes that typically produce between 8 and 20 watts per channel. The stable 6-ohm impedance presents a manageable load for most output transformer designs used in single-ended amplifiers. In typical listening rooms at moderate volumes, a well-designed 8 to 15 watt SET amplifier will drive the P3ESR XD2 to satisfying levels with the natural harmonic richness and midrange intimacy that single-ended amplifier enthusiasts seek. For larger rooms or higher playback levels, a push-pull tube or quality solid-state amplifier in the 25 to 50 watt range will provide additional dynamic headroom.

What is RADIAL4 technology and why does it matter in a compact speaker like the P3ESR XD2?

RADIAL4 is Harbeth's fourth-generation proprietary loudspeaker diaphragm material, developed through decades of polymer science research at Harbeth's Lindfield, England facility, designed to produce a cone that behaves as a near-perfect piston across the critical midrange frequencies. In a compact stand-mount speaker like the P3ESR XD2, where the single 110mm driver must handle both bass and midrange duties up to the crossover point, the quality of the cone material has a particularly profound effect on the overall sonic character. A cone material with high internal damping, such as conventional polypropylene, will smear fine midrange detail and produce a slightly veiled, closed-in character. A cone with excessive stiffness, such as aluminium or ceramic, can introduce ringing and harshness. RADIAL4 achieves the balance between these extremes, producing a cone that is stiff enough to move pistonically without breakup modes while having sufficiently low internal damping to preserve transient accuracy and fine detail resolution, qualities that are especially audible and important in a compact speaker used primarily for near-field listening.

What stands work best with the Harbeth P3ESR XD2?

Harbeth recommends stands that bring the tweeter, positioned 230mm from the cabinet base, to approximately seated ear level, which typically corresponds to stand heights in the range of 600mm to 700mm depending on listening chair height and personal preference. Dedicated stands from Atacama, Target, and Sound Anchors designed for compact bookshelf loudspeakers are widely used with the P3ESR XD2. Stands should be sufficiently rigid and can be mass-loaded with sand or shot to minimise vibration transfer between the cabinet and floor. Harbeth specifies that the P3ESR XD2 should be positioned at least 30 centimetres from the rear wall to allow its acoustic loading to develop correctly and to avoid bass reinforcement that could upset the speaker's tonal balance.

Is the Harbeth P3ESR XD2 suitable for a small apartment or secondary listening room?

Yes, the Harbeth P3ESR XD2 is exceptionally well suited to small apartments, secondary listening rooms, offices, and any space where a larger loudspeaker would be acoustically or physically impractical. Its compact cabinet dimensions of 306mm by 190mm by 184mm give it one of the smallest footprints in the Harbeth range, and its bass extension starting at 75Hz means it will not overload a small room with excessive low-frequency energy in the way that larger ported designs can. The P3ESR XD2's compatibility with amplifiers from 15 watts per channel also makes it easy to pair with compact integrated amplifiers suited to smaller spaces. Many owners of larger Harbeth loudspeakers keep a pair of P3ESR XD2 speakers as a secondary system in a bedroom or study, finding that the speaker delivers a fully musically satisfying experience even at low listening volumes in intimate room environments.

Interesting
Format: Kindle
This was a very captivating book once you got into it thoroughly. But the third person perspective was a bit hard to get used to. But as you got into it and followed the different characters, it was interesting and filled with intrigue, conflict and forbidden love. I can’t wait to read the next one and to complete the series.

OUTSTANDING
Format: Kindle
This was very, very good. The world is vast and characters are complex. There is a good plot with a whole lot going on. This is well written. Good twists and turns and some heart breaking moments. You will love these characters, they have heart and loyalty. I am hoping that there will be several more books. We've yet to see anything from the Sea Court but only a mention of them here and there. The Wood Court was given a quick couple of scenes, and only as far as some warriors, we've yet to enter their court and the Shadow Court, I'm not sure if they will be a force for good or bad, but they definitely will play a much bigger role moving forward. This is primarily the Ice and Air Courts. Told in multiple views, which I loved, it gives you a chance to see things from different eyes. There's alot of political maneuvering and deception. I loved it and will pick up the next book as it becomes available. If you like The Fae and the courts, you should love this. I think the author has mucn in store for us.

Definitely worth the read!
Format: Kindle
After taking a deep breath and taking in that wicked twist of an ending, I have finally composed myself. My first thought when I started this book was that I love Reyna's character. I was intrigued by her connection with her familiar and the Ruin that is plaguing her land. It came as no surprise that she took her sister's place in an attempt to protect her. When they reach the Air Court everything slows down. This is where it was iffy for me. First of all, I like multiple POV's in books however 7 is a bit much. It starts to interrupt the story line. I felt like I was finally making progress connecting with one character, then it was switched to another person. I felt they all had necessary or pertinent information but not necessarily were they all POV worthy. The only other thing that annoyed me was that Reyna constantly was " trapped." She would rush off without thinking, only to need rescuing. She is brilliant in a fight, but she really doesn't think through anything. Lorcan is amazing. I know he might be on the "bad" list, but his background is so interesting. Eislyn(Reyna's sister) is really so sweet, but calculating. I enjoyed her and Thane's dialogue. The author did an amazing job with the imagery in this book. Everything was so detailed it was easy to fall into the scene. I love unexpected twists and while part of the ending I expected, I wasn't expecting how it took place. All in all, I found it very entertaining and I am very invested in continuing this series. Favorite quotes: "The truth may be twisted but never false." "Who was she if she was not the enemy of the Air Court? What was her purpose of she no longer has that?" "In a war-torn land, love was always a lie."

Great Read!!! Great story!!!
Format: Kindle
The series is long, but Ms. Wolfhart does a fantastic job of weaving this tale while bringing so much to the characters. Surprises and plot twists along the way to keep you intrigued. There is some graphic sex, but is no way the focal point. Grammar was excellent (a rare find with a lot of self publishers) with only a few noted errors. I rarely give 4 stars, let alone 5.

Sadly, DNF
Format: Kindle
I read this thru KU. I LOVED the synopsis. And then I began reading... and it was a DNF at 68% after picking it up and putting it down several times because I really loved the main female character. *****SPOILERS***** Pros: The world is unique, intriguing and fun. The primary female character is bad-a** but not a b*tech or a mary sue. The primary female has depth. I really want to know what happens to her even tho it's been weeks and I don't remember her name. The villains to the point I read are pretty good -- an ever present threat of mysterious and possibly many culprits. Cons: Way, way too many points of view. I stopped counting at 7. It's the prime reason why I don't care about most of the characters or remember their names even when I like them. There's just too many points of view so almost none of the characters have enough book space for the author to properly develop them. This literally killed the book for me. Actually it killed my desire to read. For weeks. The main male is more villain than hero. He agreed to marry the main female then locks her up & eschews her for her sister, all while bad mouthing her as unfit to rule when he never spent any time with her getting to know her. He is actually unfit to rule as he is blind to the woes of his own kingdom and starts off a peace mission to secure a ceasefire through marriage by murdering an inn full of people in her country for no real reason. Plus, he constantly makes promises he does not keep. And it's gross of him to pine for the sister behind the main female's back. ***** As much as I really wanted to see what happened to the main female character, it wasn't enough for me to keep trying to slog thru this book. There was a lot of potential here that just fell short. Hence, 3 stars.
