Designed by Elio Martinelli in 1965, this Serpente floor lamp is one of the most significant examples of the "organic" turn in mid-century Italian design. Its secret? An ingenious swivel joint that allows the upper arm to glide horizontally, creating a silhouette that mimics the smooth, sinuous movement of a serpent. The Serpente isn't just a lamp; it’s a spatial intervention. It uses a heavy metal base to anchor a delicate, translucent methacrylate diffuser that seems to float in mid-air. The upper arm rotates 360° on a vertical axis, allowing you to position the light exactly where you need it—over a sofa, a lounge chair, or a desk without moving the base.  Crafted from opal white methacrylate, it provides a soft, warm, and completely glare-free light. A perfect marriage of a sturdy, lacquered metal structure and the (at the time) revolutionary use of plastics. It is part of the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) in New York.
