Chord Electronics Suzi Pre Preamplifier, Headphone Amplifier and Phono Stage at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Suzi Pre is a compact analogue preamplifier, MM/MC phono stage, and headphone amplifier from Chord Electronics (Maidstone, Kent, United Kingdom), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Designed by Chord Electronics founder John Franks and formally launched in 2025, the Suzi Pre delivers 0.0007% THD A-weighted and a signal-to-noise ratio of -103 dB from a chassis dimensionally matched to the Chord Suzi stereo power amplifier, the Hugo 2 DAC, and the 2go wireless streamer. Featuring two preamp gain options, selectable MC cartridge impedance, dual headphone outputs, and a remote control, the Suzi Pre functions as a standalone preamplifier, a phono preamplifier, or the analogue control centre of a complete Suzi modular system with the Chord Suzi power amplifier.

MM/MC Phono Stage with Selectable Gain and Impedance

The Suzi Pre incorporates a built-in MM/MC phono stage with selectable gain and adjustable impedance loading, configurable directly from the front panel. Two preamp gain settings, high and low, allow the output level to be matched to the sensitivity of the connected power amplifier or active loudspeakers. For MC cartridge users, multiple impedance load options can be selected to optimise the electrical interface between the cartridge and the input stage, a facility that was previously found only in dedicated phono stages or larger preamplifiers. The phono input accepts signals from both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges through a single stereo RCA turntable input, with the remaining two stereo RCA pairs accommodating line-level sources such as CD players, network streamers, or digital-to-analogue converters. Signal-to-noise ratio is -103 dB and THD measures 0.0007% A-weighted, with a frequency response spanning 7 Hz to 30 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB across the full operating range. Maximum input and output voltage are both rated at 3.5 V RMS, and the unit is powered by a 12V DC supply, enabling direct power delivery from the Suzi stereo power amplifier when the two units are used together as a stacked system.

The Complete Suzi Modular System: Three Configurations

The Suzi Pre is engineered as the analogue control hub of the Chord Suzi modular system, designed to work alongside the Chord Suzi stereo power amplifier in three primary configurations. As a standalone unit, the Suzi Pre functions as a compact analogue preamplifier with phono stage and headphone amplifier, connecting to any power amplifier or active loudspeakers via its stereo RCA output. When combined with the Chord Suzi power amplifier, the two units form a complete analogue pre/power amplifier and phono stage system in a compact footprint ideally suited to nearfield, desktop, or space-constrained listening environments. For existing Chord Hugo 2 and 2go owners, the Suzi Pre can also be used alongside a separate Hugo 2 DAC within the broader modular ecosystem, integrating analogue and digital sources under a single volume control. The central polychromatic control sphere on the Suzi Pre's front panel handles both volume and input selection, and a remote control is included for full-function operation from the listening position.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Chord Electronics Suzi Pre?

The Chord Electronics Suzi Pre is a compact analogue preamplifier, MM/MC phono stage, and headphone amplifier from Chord Electronics, designed by John Franks and formally launched in 2025. It measures 0.0007% THD A-weighted and -103 dB signal-to-noise ratio, features selectable MM/MC phono gain and MC cartridge impedance loading, includes dual headphone outputs at 3.5mm and quarter-inch, and is powered by 12V DC. It is designed to integrate directly with the Chord Suzi stereo power amplifier to form a complete analogue pre/power amplifier system, and also functions as a standalone preamplifier for use with any power amplifier or active loudspeakers.

How does the Chord Suzi Pre compare to the Cambridge Audio Alva Solo or iFi Audio Zen Phono?

The Chord Suzi Pre is a significantly more comprehensive device than standalone phono preamplifiers such as the Cambridge Audio Alva Solo or iFi Audio Zen Phono. Where those units handle phono amplification only, the Suzi Pre combines a full MM/MC phono stage with a line-level preamplifier, headphone amplifier, and remote control in a single chassis. Its 0.0007% THD and -103 dB SNR represent genuinely high-end measured performance that exceeds the Alva Solo's specification in both categories. The Suzi Pre also features selectable MC impedance loading from the front panel, a capability more commonly found in dedicated phono preamplifiers several times its size, and integrates directly into the Chord Suzi modular system for expanded functionality.

Can the Chord Suzi Pre be used with any power amplifier?

Yes, the Chord Suzi Pre functions as a standalone analogue preamplifier compatible with any power amplifier or active loudspeakers. Its stereo RCA output connects to any power amplifier accepting a line-level input, regardless of manufacturer. While it is engineered for optimal integration with the Chord Suzi stereo power amplifier within the modular Suzi system, it works equally well as a preamplifier for designs from Naim, Bryston, Parasound, or any other power amplifier accepting a standard RCA input. The two gain settings allow output level matching to amplifiers of different input sensitivities.

What is the difference between MM and MC phono settings in the Chord Suzi Pre?

Moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) are the two principal types of phono cartridge used in turntables. MM cartridges produce a higher output voltage and require a standardised 47k-ohm input impedance load, while MC cartridges produce a much lower output voltage and require a specific impedance load that varies by cartridge model to operate optimally. The Chord Suzi Pre accommodates both types through a single dedicated RCA phono input, with front-panel selectable gain settings and selectable impedance loading for MC cartridges. This allows the Suzi Pre to be configured correctly for the specific cartridge fitted to the user's turntable without any external adapters or additional equipment.

Does the Chord Suzi Pre include a headphone amplifier?

Yes, the Chord Suzi Pre includes a built-in headphone amplifier with both a 3.5mm and a quarter-inch (6.35mm) output on the front panel, enabling private listening directly from the preamplifier stage without a separate headphone amplifier. This makes the Suzi Pre a practical all-in-one analogue hub for desktop and nearfield systems where a turntable, line-level sources, and headphones all need to coexist within a compact footprint. Both headphone outputs are available simultaneously, allowing two listeners to use different headphone types at the same time.

How does the Chord Suzi Pre integrate with the Suzi power amplifier?

The Chord Suzi Pre and Suzi stereo power amplifier are designed to operate as a matched pre/power amplifier system. The Suzi Pre's stereo RCA output connects to one of the Suzi power amplifier's RCA inputs, and the 12V DC power supply can be shared between the two units when stacked, with the Suzi power amplifier providing 12V DC to the Suzi Pre via the DC jack, reducing the number of separate power connections required. Together, the two units deliver a complete analogue pre/power amplifier with phono stage and headphone amplification in a chassis footprint smaller than most single-box integrated amplifiers.

Beautiful
Format: Hardcover
A gorgeously written book about a young Palestinian American who finds her voice and identity. Genre: Upper Middle Grade/Lower YA -also some magical realism elements: olives cause time travel Author:Nora Lester Murad Publisher: Crocodile Books/ Interlink This beautiful hardcover (the book truly is absolutely gorgeous and I just cant stop staring at it!) tells the story of Ida- a young 13 year old Palestinian American daughter of immigrants. Bullied out of her school due to being Palestinian, Ida struggles to fit in. But one day, when she eats special olives, she is transported to a new type of multiverse where Ida’s family is still in Palestine. And by going back and forth, Ida realizes who she wants to be and what her passion in life is. This gorgeous book truly transported me to Palestine!! The rich descriptions helped me feel grounded in the setting, and I almost felt like I could taste the crackling olives, listen to the adhan of the Mosques, and walk the streets of Palestine. Tbh- as a Syrian myself, I found many parallels with life in Damascus to life in Jerusalem, and it made me fall in love with the book even more. Juxtaposed with the beauty of the land and the liveliness of the family and community around Ida is the harsh reality of Israeli occupation. The author does not minimize it, she portrays it in the voice of a teenager quite honestly, and her emotional scenes showing Ida helping a young boy and trying to figure out how to save her village and heart-wrenching and emotional. I also appreciated how nuanced the book was. The occupation is clearly presented as apartheid and wrong, but there is no antisemitism. The author mentions her Jewish background in the author’s note, the book states that there are Jews who support Palestinian rights and Ida sympathizes with Jews who immigrated to America to escape persecution. I really liked how this book was written- the layers of searching for identity, holding onto your homeland, resisting occupation, and the encouragement for the reader to practice BDS and raise their voices for justice. Definitely a must read and book I can see be adapted in curriculums for middle schools.

Compelling from start to finish.
Format: Paperback
This is a wonderful book -- no doubt for young adults, but for all the rest of us, too. Here is the review we included in Rethinking Schools magazine: Middle school student Ida tries to sit where she is “unnoticeable, like the dust on last year’s history books.” She seeks to avoid stereotypical insults hurled at her for being from a Palestinian immigrant family. The school’s silence aggravates the problem. Ida notes, “Nobody even says the word ‘Palestine’ in my school. The teachers are afraid to teach anything about the Middle East, even if the topic has nothing to do with politics.” As the mother of three girls raised in the West Bank and now living in the United States, author Nora Lester Murad is deeply grounded in the book’s characters and themes. And she knows how to captivate middle school readers. Ida eats an olive that sends her time traveling from her home in Massachusetts to her family’s home in the West Bank, introducing readers to both the beauty of their village and the violence of the Israeli occupation that eventually forced her family to leave for their safety. This experience gives Ida the courage and conviction to speak in a school assembly about the realities of the occupation, comparing it to what happened to “Indigenous peoples here. How they were pushed off their land and survived so much violence, as if they weren’t human.” Stepping out of the shadows, she insists that students and teachers see her and her family’s humanity.

Couldn't put Ida in the Middle down until the end
Format: Hardcover
Ida in the Middle so vividly captures the point of view of a girl not only sorting out feeling like and being treated like an outsider in a new school, but her relationship with her immigrant parents, her younger and older sister (she is in the middle), and her growing awareness of her family's community in the Middle East. It is is warm novel of feelings, friendship, and the magic transport to the "Its A Wonderful Life" alternate reality of what being in 8th grade would be like if her family had stayed in the village where her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins still live. It is also a novel, like those set in other wartimes, that exposes hard realities. Descriptions of her alternative private school in the US and watching the "Arabs Got Talent" music competition on TV have some of sly wit of Where'd You Go, Bernadette, but the learning that Ida and the reader develop about both the community ties and the danger and dehumanization of checkpoints, home demolitions, and raids takes the book to another level of complexity and empathy for difficult circumstances and choices. Throughout, Ida's viewpoint as a 13-year-old trying to understand the world around her is fresh and appealing. She proves to be an unexpectedly level-headed protagonist as the plot carries her into danger and into new readiness for action. Through the course of the novel, both the reader's and Ida's empathy grows for the desperate situation of Palestinian farmers whose land is under siege (and of all living under occupation), for parents' struggle over the choice to remain out of the country, and for the daily decisions to claim joy and pleasure even if it entails contradictions. Ida left me energized and inspired, and ready to gift this book to the middle-grade kids I know, and also to my teacher friends who keep books in their classrooms for students to read.

A "magical" story of Palestinian life in the West Bank
Format: Hardcover
This young adult novel by Nora Lester Murad focuses on the quandary of a Palestinian-American teenager, Ida, who is learning about American culture while her extended family in the West Bank must cope with Israel’s many policies that discriminate against Palestinians. As Ida ponders how to fit in better at her school and a topic for a school assignment, she is magically transported to the land of her ancestors where she soon finds herself in a difficult situation. The novel explores several aspects of these policies, including the demolition of a friend’s home due to her family’s inability to get a construction permit. In between these difficult situations, there are some twists and turns that remind the reader of the importance of family and friends. This novel will help to validate the experiences of Palestinian youth who are "caught in the middle" like Ida. Readers of all ages will gain new insights into conditions for Palestinians living in the West Bank and how these pressures impact the daily lives and futures of Palestinian youth. (A teacher’s guide is available, which will be especially helpful for those unfamiliar with the situations described in Ida in the Middle. )

A must-read to shed light on the experiences of Palestinian-American children
Format: Hardcover
I picked up this book not knowing what to expect. What I ended up with was a rich and beautiful telling of the experiences of a young Palestinian-American girl who is trying to find her voice in a world that misunderstands and silences her. She is the hero that so many students need to hear about. Ida in the Middle beautifully weaves history, culture, and hope together for an empowering story of justice.
