Hellen is a Kontakt library based on ghostly voices and creatures sounds. We have teamed up with vocalist Alessandra Cognetta a.k.a. Psamathes to record a variety of vocal styles: operatic/soprano (multisampled), screams, whispers, growls, gasps, yells plus several tonal and atonal vocal layers and a variety of found sounds ranging from animal recordings to metallic friction and bowed effects.

Most of them have been processed with advanced sound design techniques (spectral
morph in Kyma, formant and vowel processing etc.) to create a huge variety of sounds: soprano textures and layers, demoniac screams, evocative laments and howling sounds, unsettling laughs, designed creatures effects, ethereal whisperings , elusive broken sentences, monster growls and vocalizations, hair-raising screeches and shrieks, breathing loops (tempo synched) and even syllables and phrases in a fictional language inspired to ancient Latin.

All the 12 instruments in Hellen (playable and sound design) fit particularly well the horror and thriller realm; they have been conceived and developed to cover the needs of the modern composer and ambient producer, from the vocal textures evoking scenes of haunted settings, to terrifying vocal stabs to create effective jump scares and impactful vocal effects.

12 KONTAKT INSTRUMENTS

Vocal Textures is a playable instrument based on two independent layers (L1 and
L2) of vocal tonal and atonal sounds that can be blended, filtered and morphed from the intuitive main panel in the UI. Each layer features cutoff, resonance, LFO and Volume Envelope controls. With the useful VOCAL MORPH knob it is possible to easily create interesting sonic combinations from any chosen pair of sounds. Vocal Textures feature 56 Kontakt snapshots.

Hellen features 7 One Shot SFX instruments, divided by category of sounds:
Screams, Laments-Howlings, Creatures, Whispers-Sentences, MonsterGrowls, Shrieks-Screeches, Gasps-Yells.

The One Shot SFX instruments in Hellen feature a per-sample control on any
parameter (Volume, Pitch, Low Pass Filter, High Pass Filter, LFO and Volume
Envelope, Straight/Reverse play), plus the possibility to globally control any
parameter by using the ‘Global Controls’ window. By using the Extend switch, you can play any chosen sample chromatically along the keyboard. Hellen features two vocal sequencers/builders: the Syllables Sequencer and the Breath Sequencer. They both allow to sequence short groups of tempo synched syllables and create a long, rhythmical spoken phrase and/or breathing sequence. The Syllables Sequencer is based on a fictional language occasionally resembling ancient Latin, whereas the Breath Sequencers features short breathing sounds.

In both instruments, the two featured voices can be independently activated/deactivated per step. All the syllables have been recorded at 70 bpm and use the Time Machine Pro in Kontakt (HQ), so the quality of the sound is not compromised by bpm changes.

The Vocalise Builder in Hellen is a sound design instrument conceived and developed to easily create customized demonic and creature-esque voices. It is based on 3 independent layers featuring dry and less designed sounds in in order to provide useful source material and allow room for creative experimentation. The 3 layers can be automatically stacked on the top of each other by simply pressing the green key on the virtual keyboard. Each layer can be played either with a regular sample playback or in Time Stretch mode, with control on the amount of time stretch and formants. By using the several randomization options, it is possible to quickly create interesting combinations of sounds and customized sound effects. The Breath Loops instrument in Hellen features tempo synched loops (original tempo 70 bpm) automatically synched to the master tempo in the DAW.

By using the Half Tempo and Formant controls (independent per each sample)
it is possible to alter the timing and the gender of the voice and creating tensive
vocal rhythms.

Slightly Inaccurate but Works Well
Pros: Works perfectly for what I need it for. I use an aeropress and it's super easy to weigh the coffee going in and then the water on top of that. Then start the timer for the brew time and you've got a beautiful cup of coffee! Very bright display, easy to read, and comes with a rubber pad which makes cleanup easy. Cons: Not super accurate, but it's fine for making coffee unless you want to be exact. Sometimes the tare doesn't hold perfectly. For example, put your coffee on the scale. Tare it. Take it off. Put it back on. It might read a tenth of a gram or so one way or the other. Never impacted my coffee routine...

Been working well for over a year
Had this for over a year now and no real issues. The only issue I can think of is that if something is a bit too close to the scale, the scale can fluctuate a bit by a gram or so. Just make sure nothing is touching it, especially anything electronic. Beyond that, it's a no-nonsense scale that works great with actual tactile buttons. Its refresh rate can lag behind a tiny bit, but you get used to it by stopping your pours in anticipation. For example, I typically do 300mL pours in total, and I usually start slowing down/stopping at around 280g. Battery life is pretty good, but the battery life indicator doesn't do a good job of letting you know when you need to replace the batteries. So you may end up with it powering off mid-brew, but I've only had to replace the batteries once despite daily use over the past year or so. That being said, it's useful to also do stuff like the 4:6 method based on water level vs timer too. I'd also say it may not be extremely accurate as sometimes it fluctuates by .1 grams, but it is accurate enough for practical purposes. For reference, .1g is simply ~1 coffee bean, and unless you're an espresso perfectionist, 1 coffee bean isn't going to make any real difference. In summary: + Just the essentials if you only want the essentials + Tactile buttons + Display is pretty nice + Accurate enough for practical purposes + Battery life very good + Will work for at least a year, can't say any longer until I own it for longer + Great for the cost = WIll not refresh weight as quickly as say an acacia scale which costs at least four times as much, easy to compensate for - Battery life indicator isn't great, so it may power off mid-brew every half year or so - Sensitive to adjacent electronic devices, 1 or 2 inches is enough distance - Sensitive to adjacent objects, be mindful of anything that is touching the silicone, even if it's barely touching by a hair

Works Perfectly, Ignore "Drift" Reviews
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
I'm very happy with the accuracy and refresh rate of the scale. The two tone LED color scheme is a nice touch. I also like that the silicone cover is well-affixed to the scale and won't slide around. I only wish the scale came in white! Don't be fooled by other reviews. This scale doesn't "drift" any more or less than any other scale. Those people who say otherwise are likely storing it in a very different temperature environment than their use area. See photos for the test I did with boiling hot water in an uninsulated carafe. 0.0g drift on all tests, with or without the silicone protector, after several minutes of letting the carafe sit on the scale surface. The only time I experienced measurement drift was when I got the package from 30F freezing outdoor conditions, unboxed it and tried it out without letting the scale warm up to ambient. The measured weight slowly dropped until it warmed up to 70F room temp; since then it's been rock solid. That is totally normal for any scale that any manufacturer, cheap or expensive, makes. It's just how this kind of scale works. Overall if you're looking for a nice scale with timer functionality, I highly recommend the Greater Goods scale.

Precise and durable
Color: Birch
Best coffee scale for the price. No crazy features which makes it very easy to use. Small enough to store in a drawer and durable enough to not worry about it breaking. Scale is very precise which makes it great for V60 and Chemex
