Designed by Philippe Starck for Kartell, the Bubble Club Sofa is nothing short of a design legend. It was the first "industrial sofa"—the first time a full-sized couch was produced from a single mold using rotational molding technology. By taking the traditional, tufted "Chesterfield" silhouette and stripping it down to its functional, weather-proof essence, Starck created a piece that is as much a pop-art statement as it is a durable piece of garden furniture. The Bubble Club Sofa is defined by its "empty" interior and its solid, monolithic exterior. It’s a literal bubble of design history.This advanced process allows for a hollow, lightweight structure that is incredibly strong. It features a drainage hole in the seat to ensure water doesn't pool after rain. The sofa mimics the rolled arms and high back of 18th-century furniture, but executes them in smooth, mass-dyed polyethylene. Unlike most outdoor sofas that require cushions to be moved inside, the Bubble Club is entirely waterproof and UV-resistant. Despite its substantial appearance, it is easy to move around the patio, yet heavy enough to stay put during a breeze. It can be cleaned simply with a garden hose or a damp cloth—no specialty fabric cleaners required. Winner of the prestigious Compasso d'Oro in 2001.
