ONE OF THE OBSERVER'S BEST DEBUT NOVELISTS OF 2026

A debut novel inspired by the true story of the author's grandparents, tracing the slow-burn love story between a Catholic priest and a progressive theology teacher across Rome and England during the twentieth century

It's the 1960s, and David is handsome, charismatic, and sworn to celibacy. An exemplary Catholic priest, devotion to God is all he's ever known, and all he ever thinks he will. In London, Margaret is adrift, healing from the loss of her parents and the end of a recent love affair. Increasingly drawn to the church, she sets out to join the new revolutions of sex and faith, taking up a teaching position at an all-girls school in David's diocese.

Decades later, Margaret is being cared for by her grandson, who has just discovered the strange truth of his family history. So begins the story of forbidden love and ardent faith, devotion and sacrifice, as the consequences of David and Margaret's unlikely union play out across generations. A first novel from an award-winning poet, A Private Man traces the exquisite love of two brilliant characters caught between passion and piety as they seek to usher the church they cherish into a more progressive era.

Great weird horror
Format: Kindle
The Department of Truth: The End of the World is the first trade volume of this series, collecting issues 1-5. I don’t want to get into spoilers, but I enjoyed seeing a world building element I was familiar with in fantasy be applied to conspiracy theories. I also loved the art. It’s really stunning! I almost want to buy a print edition in addition to my Kindle/ComiXology edition because it’s so beautiful. I found the plot and concept compelling and can’t wait to read volume 2.

meh...
Format: Paperback
collecting the entire universe, so obviously i picked this up. i absolutely LOVE the stuff written by Ryan Parrott, but it seems like the some of the side stories were just thrown into the universe for the sake of 'diversity'. identity politics is injected into BOTH of the books in this series (that i have read so far... im somewhere in the middle of year two) that were written by Melissa Flores, for no reason except projection, propaganda and forced diversity quotas. the book isnt even an extreme offender or anything, but the 'community' has caused so many problems, in ever facet of society that they have attached themselves to, that i (and so many others) now see any of it as huge red flag... and that is sad, because i was raised to have the EXACT opposite viewpoint, and i did, for well over 30 years (just turned 40).
