About the work

Andrew Pierre Hart’s new artist’s edition relates to his Whitechapel Gallery commission: 'Andrew Pierre Hart: Bio-Data Flows and Other Rhythms - A Local Story', 15 Feb – 7 July 2024. Created as an etching, and printed in three colours, using hard ground, aquatint and drypoint, the edition employs the abstract, geometric and undulating forms that feature in Hart’s recent paintings and murals. Hart describes these works as capturing ‘the quotidian rhythm of Whitechapel…it’s vibrant rumble and dissonant past'.

The artist describes the print as an exploration of ‘the nighttime rhythms experienced in Whitechapel - as a very distinct hue of inner city blue seeps into and soaks the image; imbuing the moment with a warm and mysterious site of listening’. The figure in the edition represents for Hart ‘a type of calling, whereby city life and local noise influence rhythm & sound’. He references Brother Ah a self-taught French horn player, who learnt to play by listening to the sounds of the city, from birds chirping, the rumbles of cars to the noise emanating from a city interacting.

About the artist

Andrew Pierre Hart lives and works in London. He describes his work as focussed on ‘the symbiotic relationship between sound and painting’, while also incorporating aspects of sculpture, mural-making, installation, language, performance and film. Hart spent the first part of his career as a DJ and musician running the record label Deepart, which specialised in electronic music and Detroit-style techno. Musical techniques such as improvisation, ‘rhythmic research’ and an interest in the way sound resonates in space now infuse his multidisciplinary art practice. Recent figurative paintings have drawn on Western art historical precedents while also representing real and mythic figures that relate to diasporic experiences in London. His abstract tapestry-like compositions draw on sources as diverse as the hand-painted murals of the Gurunsi people in Burkina Faso, Nigeria; Yoruba divination codes; graphic musical scores; and digital coding.

This was my puppy’s fav toy for the longest time. Not too heavy and is the right amount of tough for a chewing teething puppy. Cute toy that’s easy to chew and safe for a teething puppy it’s not loud and lasts. Worth the price.
