This elegant mid-nineteenth century watch fob seal features a finely carved chalcedony matrix suspended within a sculptural metal mount, created to be worn upon a gentleman’s watch chain as both ornament and personal seal.

Collected by Kathryn Hastings during the earliest years of her artistic practice, this was one of the first antique seals in her personal collection and appears throughout her early work, including some of the clear wax seals that helped define her initial visual language. The impression became part of the evolving symbolic vocabulary from which much of her later work would emerge.
