WW1 Era M1898 German "Quill Point" Bayonet W/ Matching Numbers by Simson & Co SuhlScarce and excellent example of an imperial German made model M1898 pattern "quill point" sword bayonet with matching numbers. This particular piece was exported to Peru for use on the Peruvian contract mauser Model 1909 rifle. Scarce and excellent example of an imperial German made model M1898 pattern "quill point" sword bayonet with matching numbers. This particular piece was exported to Peru for use on the Peruvian contract mauser Model 1909 rifle.
The 98S bayonet was produced for use with the Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle using the new and soon to be widely copied bar mounting system.
The 20 3/4 inch single-edged blade has a rounded, pipe-back spine above a single, narrow fuller. The blade terminates in a double-edged quill point. The ricasso is stamped with the maker’s mark of Simson & Co., of Suhl. Both bayonet and scabbard have matching numbers #21189. An additional "M" is stamped before the blade starts to run. This bayonet is German made with a very bold Peruvian crest stamped in the Pommel. The blade is in excellent condition and retains its blunt factory edge.
The steel cross guard is 2 3/8-inch in length and the bayonets press-stud mechanism is in perfect working order.
The bayonet is complete with its steel mounted leather scabbard. The leather is in good condition with most of its stitching intact, with the exception of a 4.50-inch separation on its lower half. (Still very sturdy and does not affect performance) The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is an excellent example of an Imperial WW1 Era German S98 bayonet that was made and exported.
