This seal is not just a tool for sealing letters; it’s a work of art. The three hares, with their ears interlocked in the center, create a captivating, three-dimensional effect that seems to leap out from the wax.
The three hares motif is an ancient symbol, steeped in mystery and rich in meaning, that has appeared across various cultures and regions from Europe to China since at least the 6th century. This intriguing design, which features three rabbits or hares chasing each other in a circle, with their ears forming a triangular knot at the center, symbolizes unity, eternity, and the cyclical nature of life. Each hare appears to have two ears, yet closer inspection reveals only three ears are shared among them, creating an optical illusion. The motif has been found in sacred sites, including churches and temples, suggesting themes of spiritual significance, rebirth, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Its enduring appeal lies in its enigmatic interpretation and the universal message of harmony and balance it conveys.
Kathryn was inspired by many versions of this classic motif, but drew the most inspiration from the stone carvings Paderborn Cathedral and Vikki Yeates illustration. She wanted the legs to overlap gracefully like Yeates depicted but to have the rabbits smooth like stone like the Cathedral stone carvings of Paderborn.
This seal looks beautiful plain or painted. (See photos for examples of the spectacular detail that the seal can render).
The kit includes three waxes (white, silver and black), chrome powder, as well as a melter and spoon.
