Art Deco Sterling Silver Graduated Curb Link Watch Chain

This sterling silver graduated curb link chain is an example of a very-well made Art Deco watch chain, made by Herbert Bushell & Son. Made in Birmingham in 1925, all the parts of this chain are original, with every individual link, as well as the dog clips and T-bar, containing the sterling silver mark of the lion passant. The chain has a center T-bar that drops down, and on either side of the central jump ring, there’s a graduated curb link that goes from small, to big, to small again—with equal proportion to each of the smaller sections. As the chain graduates, each link is a different size and the links have to fit together carefully according to where they are in the graduation. The chain has a dog clip at each end, which can be worn at the front of the chain with a pendant clipped in, or at the back of the chain, with the T-bar in front as the focal point. Sterling silver is a great alternative to gold, because it allows you to own an English watch chain at a more affordable price price—though the level of workmanship that went into the creation of this chain is the same as a gold piece. 

The chain is 15 5/8” long—a great length for a necklace, with a width that ranges from 1/4” to 3/16”. The T-bar drops down 1 1/2” and is 1 1/2” across. It has a substantial weight of 52.1 grams. Marked on every link as sterling silver, and marked on the T-bar and dog clips with the hallmarks for HB&S, sterling silver, Birmingham, and 1925.
