COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Support Children with Special Needs course. This program has been designed to equip you with the knowledge, perspective and practical capability required to support children with diverse developmental, physical, cognitive and social-emotional needs in early childhood and community settings. You will explore inclusive approaches, legal frameworks, communication strategies, environmental adaptations and collaborative practices that enable every child to participate, learn and thrive.

This course begins by examining key definitions and historical perspectives on disability, the importance of inclusive practices, and how models of disability shape understanding and support. This learning area establishes foundational concepts, including the role of language and labels, and demonstrates how inclusive education and care benefit all children.

The next learning area explores the types and categories of special needs, alongside the legal and ethical considerations that govern disability support. This learning area outlines legislation, duty of care, confidentiality obligations and privacy requirements, and introduces person-centred planning, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Individualised Family Service Plans (IFSPs), and methods for goal setting and tracking progress.

The next learning area focuses on communication strategies for children with special needs. You will examine augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), visual supports, communication boards, sign language and gesture-based systems. This learning area highlights how tailored communication enables participation, expression and understanding across varied developmental profiles.

The next learning area discusses how to create inclusive environments through Universal Design for Learning (UDL), environmental modifications for accessibility and the adaptation of activities and materials. This learning area also introduces behaviour management techniques, including Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) approaches that promote regulation, engagement and positive interactions.

The next learning area addresses collaboration with families and support networks through family-centred care approaches, partnerships with parents and carers, and interagency collaboration through multi-disciplinary teams. This learning area expands on sensory processing, sensory integration, sensory-friendly environments and sensory diet strategies that support children with sensory needs.

The next learning area examines assistive technologies and adaptive equipment, including types of assistive technology, assessing and selecting devices, and training and support for safe and effective use. This learning area also explores advocacy and the rights of children with special needs, the development of self-advocacy skills, the role of advocacy organisations and methods for promoting inclusion.

The next learning area considers cultural competence and diversity awareness in special needs care, with an emphasis on how cultural identity, language background, family values and community context shape children’s experiences and support needs. This learning area highlights the importance of respectful practice and inclusive engagement across diverse communities.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand the foundations of disability and inclusion, apply legal and ethical frameworks, design communication strategies, create inclusive and sensory-responsive environments, collaborate effectively with families and professionals, integrate assistive technologies and uphold the rights and dignity of children with special needs in all care and learning contexts.

Huge and fun. Good for two dogs to play with together.
Color: Yellow
This dog toy is great! And it's HUGE. Each tentacle crinkles, and the dogs love to play tug-of-war with it. It seems to be holding up well, too. It seemed a bit pricy for a dog toy, but it turns out it was worth it.

My dogs new favorite toy!
Color: Blue
His new favorite toy! My dog absolutely loves it!!! It’s much bigger than I thought it would be so my dog has to be careful when he’s running with it because he will trip on the legs of the octopus. The best part is there is a little squeaker in the bottom of each leg! Bonus!!! If your dog chews up stuffed animals, this will be no different. It is a stuffed animal. My baby just likes to carry it around and squeak it a 1000 times a day. Don’t mind my crazy voice in the video. That’s the voice I use when he’s excited about a toy. He greets me every day with his octopus.🥰

Fun while they lasted
Color: Green
I ordered two. One for each pup. Both my puppies loved this toy. The first one lasted less than a day with my pup who loves to do the death shake on everything. The second lasted two days with the other as she chews in the same spot. They loved the crinkle noise. However, I'm taking one star away due to not lasting long. Everything else was fine and they enjoyed them while they lasted. Note that most toys do not last long with my pups.

My puppy is a 7wk old Great Pyrenees & Lab mix. He loves this toy! Fun for tug of war and for cuddles. Definitely worth the money. It is durable enough for razor puppy teeth.
