The works of Martin Morobubuna can be seen hanging on walls the world over. Martin joined the Centre for Creative Arts in the mid 1970’s. At 17 years old he was the youngest to do so and was to become one of the elder statesmen of contemporary art in PNG and remains in much demand.
Like many Papua New Guinean artists Martin’s style, vision and themes are drawn from his cultural heritage but also his experiences with urbanisation and development. Many of his works depict the stories and images of everyday life in the Trobriand Islands while others are drawn from more urban themes. Martin is a talented and versatile artist who has worked across several mediums including printmaking, painting, drawing and low relief wood carving. He has exhibited in Europe and Australasia and if you are lucky you can find him showing his works around the local Moresby craft markets on a Saturday morning.
Martin has several pieces displayed in the National Gallery of Australia and has held numerous exhibitions in Australia.
Martin passed away suddenly in 2013.
