First bred in the eastern part of Italy in the delta, the name Romagnol can lagòt, literally means "water dog". As lifestyles and terrain changes the Lagotto was trained to sniff out truffles. They soon became THE Go-To Dog for truffle hunting. Today they are still used as truffle hunters, but excel as family pets. They DO need a job to burn off some of that bouncy, truffle hunting energy.

Many Lagotto Romagnolo dogs have some level of nose dryness. This dryness can range from a bit of dullness or dryness to the more extreme condition, Nasal Hyperkeratosis, in which the entire nose is covered with layers of crusty, scab-like tissue - see examples below.
