This SACD represents one of the very rare opportunities to appreciate the great violinist from Padua on a recorded medium. Indeed, this extraordinary virtuoso performer, who in 1997 won the Paganini Competition in Genoa, is extremely rarely featured on disc. He was the only Italian, besides Salvatore Accardo and Massimo Quarta, in the multi-decade history of the most important violin competition in the world. Besides being a soloist, Angeleri also conducts the prestigious Orchestra delle Venezie, a symphony ensemble he founded himself. The musical program is fascinating and lively: the dominant theme sees the contamination between the melodies and rhythms of popular music, mediated by the compositional talent of some of the most well-known and appreciated "cultured" composers of the nineteenth century. Almost seamlessly, one can thus appreciate the gypsy echoes in Sarasate's "Fantasia sopra La Carmen" and in "Zingaresca". This is followed by Paganini's famous variations on the melodies of "Carnevale di Venezia". And again, Bazzini's fantastic scherzo titled "La Ronda dei Folletti", skillfully orchestrated by Giovanni Angeleri himself from the original version for piano and violin. The program concludes with two compositions by Wieniawski, "Legende", which also gives the album its title, and the very famous "Polonaise de Concert".
