Walk into an office, shop, pub or house in Wigan and there is a good chance people will be talking about the rugby. Whether the going is good or not, Wigan Warriors are the topic of conversation underpinning the hum of any day. “It’s in our blood,” sing the Wigan Warriors fans during their weekly ritual of going to the rugby.

But what does that actually mean? To them, it’s a lot more than watching 26 blokes smash hell out of each other once a week. Why does watching a game take centre stage in the lives of those who make trips to places like Hull, Castleford and Perpignan to watch, cheer and barete their heroes?

And what about the players on the pitch, now and in the past? Even supporters of rival clubs will concede Wigan is special - whether that’s in admiration or envy. Trophies provide regular milestones in a history dotted with some of the best players that have ever held a rugby ball.

Through their own words, supporters, players, heroes and not such heroes talk about what Wigan Rugby League means to them, and why when the full-time hooter goes this rugby-obsessed group of people don’t switch off.

About the Author

Tom McCooey is a sports reporter for The Wigan Observer and Wigan Post. Having been a freelance rugby league writer since 2011, Tom joined the Wigan sports desk in 2013, just in time to cover the League and Cup double.

Having been one of the rugby obsessed since a damp October night in 1995 when his dad took him to see England beat Fiji in a World Cup match, he is now one of the many in Wigan whose timeline is held together by memorable matches.

Even growing up, getting a dog and settling down hasn’t dampened a life-long enthusiasm for something that means so much more than just a game on a grass pitch, huge programme collection and an embarrassing knowledge of trivia.

I like the shirt and the price was decent
Size: X-Large, Color: Black
Nice but I don’t like it on my neck. I’m giving it away as a gift.

Too small for the shown size.
Size: XX-Large, Color: Black, Size: XX-Large, Color: Black
I usually would buy XL size but in this case I bought XXL thinking since it's cotton it might shrink. But when I tried the T-shirt it was too small. My older XL sized T-shirt has 2 1/2" larger total shoulder width and 3" wider body width. See attached pictures. Length was also a bit shorter by about 1/2". I will to return it.

Does not match the size
Size: 3X-Large, Color: Blue
Way smaller than the size indicated. Very thin material, almost see- thru.

Super soft, runs small, long tail
High quality, super soft, good neck height, nice price, ready to go right out of the dryer, medium thick material, works well under a sport coat or sweat shirt, snug fit--runs about one size small. Length is about four inches too long. So, ideally made for tall and skinny people (I am short and thick), but going one size up works fine for me except have to tuck it in due to the length.
