The Collected Stories of Machado de AssisWidely acclaimed as the progenitor of twentieth century Latin American fiction, Machado de Assis (1839 1908) the son of a mulatto father and a washerwoman, and the grandson of freed slaves was hailed in his lifetime as Brazil's greatest writer. Widely acclaimed as the progenitor of twentieth-century Latin American fiction, Machado de Assis (1839-1908)--the son of a mulatto father and a washerwoman, and the grandson of freed slaves--was hailed in his lifetime as Brazil's greatest writer. His prodigious output of novels, plays, and stories rivaled contemporaries like Chekhov, Flaubert, and Maupassant, but, shockingly, he was barely translated into English until 1963 and still lacks proper recognition today. Drawn to the master's psychologically probing tales of fin-de-siecle Rio de Janeiro, a world populated with dissolute plutocrats, grasping parvenus, and struggling spinsters, acclaimed translators Margaret Jull Costa and Robin Patterson have now combined Machado's seven short-story collections into one volume, featuring seventy-six stories, a dozen appearing in English for the first time.

Born in the outskirts of Rio, Machado displayed a precocious interest in books and languages and, despite his impoverished background, miraculously became a well-known intellectual figure in Brazil's capital by his early twenties. His daring narrative techniques and coolly ironic voice resemble those of Thomas Hardy and Henry James, but more than either of these writers, Machado engages in an open playfulness with his reader--as when his narrator toys with readers' expectations of what makes a female heroine in "Miss Dollar," or questions the sincerity of a slave's concern for his dying master in "The Tale of the Cabriolet."

Predominantly set in the late nineteenth-century aspiring world of Rio de Janeiro--a city in the midst of an intense transformation from colonial backwater to imperial metropolis--the postcolonial realism of Machado's stories anticipates a dominant theme of twentieth-century literature. Readers witness the bourgeoisie of Rio both at play, and, occasionally, attempting to be serious, as depicted by the chief character of "The Alienist," who makes naively grandiose claims for his Brazilian hometown at the expense of the cultural capitals of Europe. Signifiers of new wealth and social status abound through the landmarks that populate Machado's stories, enlivening a world in the throes of transformation: from the elegant gardens of Passeio P blico and the vibrant Rua do Ouvidor--the long, narrow street of fashionable shops, theaters and caf s, "the Via Dolorosa of long-suffering husbands"--to the port areas of Sa de and Gamboa, and the former Valongo slave market.

One of the greatest masters of the twentieth century, Machado reveals himself to be an obsessive collector of other people's lives, who writes: "There are no mysteries for an author who can scrutinize every nook and cranny of the human heart." Now, The Collected Stories of Machado de Assis brings together, for the first time in English, all of the stories contained in the seven collections published in his lifetime, from 1870 to 1906. A landmark literary event, this majestic translation reintroduces a literary giant who must finally be integrated into the world literary canon.

Seam shows right in the center of your brea$t!
Size: 38C, Color: Dark Pink
Had to return even though I loved the fit and feel of the bra. The seam that goes across the middle and your nippies shows through on every type of shirt I wear. And one side has a little extra room which made it ripple vertically I guess because the material/lace is so thin. Real bummer. Would be nice if B cup was available. C was just a little large.

This one is a keeper…
Size: 36D, Color: Nude
Bra shopping is truly one of my least favorite things to do, and it is always so frustrating to me. Online bra shopping tends to be even worse, so I had little hope for this bra but took a chance anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it! A true test for me is whether or not I notice I’m wearing it. I’ve worn it off and on for several days and I totally forget about it. Having nurses two babies and approaching my 40s, my girls need a lot of support and this bra delivered. I thankfully discovered years ago that if you have deflated mom boobs, an unlined cup is the best way to take what you have and give it shape. This one does just that. I have very mixed feelings on the lace though. On the one hand, it is sexy and feminine and I don’t find that in bras very much anymore (at least not ones that provide the kind of lift and support that I require). However, the lace is very noticeable through a shirt. I really can only wear this bra with a thick top or sweater. Otherwise, it’s just too noticeable and I’m not comfortable with that. Wearing a cami underneath a top helps slightly though. Overall, I’m glad I have this bra and I’ll be ordering another color. It feels well made, the material is nice, and it gives my bust a shapely (and youthful 😭) appearance. I wore it all day in 90+ heat at Magic Kingdom and it didn’t bother me at all, so it definitely qualifies as lightweight and comfortable in my book. I took a stab at a size and the 36D feels right. I *maybe* could have gotten a 34 but the 36 doesn’t feel loose on the tightest loops. On occasion, depending on the brand, I can be either a D or DD. I think this is worth trying and looks more expensive than it really is!

Gorgeous Bra, But My Chest Declined the Opportunity
Size: 40C, Color: Black, Size: 40C, Color: Black
This bra is genuinely beautiful and very well made. The fabric, stitching, and overall construction felt much more expensive than I expected. Unfortunately, my body once again reminded me that I am apparently not built according to standard human engineering specs. Every few years I convince myself, “Surely this time I am a normal-sized woman who can wear regular bras.” Then I order one designed for actual flesh-bearing individuals and reality humbles me immediately. The cups stood there optimistically waiting to be filled while my chest contributed little to the project. The straps also kept sliding off my narrow shoulders like they were trying to escape the situation entirely. None of this is the bra’s fault. The fabric is soft, silky, and looks like money. It's just as pretty as the photos. The straps appear as though they could support a lot for a long time. The bra did its job. My body simply refused to participate. If you have average proportions and shoulders that can support standard straps, this is probably a fantastic purchase. I, however, must return to my specialized tiny-person undergarments and accept my fate.

I really like this bra, but...
The bra fir great and I wish I could keep it. The big downfall is the lace and the middle seam. Both show thruogh any shirt material so you can't ear it under anything without the bra showing through as bumpy. I'm returing it for that reason along.
