Six Questions Your Bojangles' Franchise Business Plan Must Answer

We developed this food industry franchise operations manual and business plan using our own research into the economics of a high-volume Southern-style fast food unit. The plan is pre-filled with data reflecting a unit targeting over $3.6 million in first-year revenue and is designed to break even in just 4 months. All six chapters are fully editable in Microsoft Word, allowing you to tailor the plan to your specific location and assumptions.

1. Executive Summary: What is the core business opportunity?

The opportunity is to launch a high-volume quick-service restaurant franchise unit adjacent to a major university campus, capitalizing on a large, built-in customer base of students, faculty, and commuters. The business model is built on operational efficiency standards, leveraging a dual-lane drive-thru and dedicated mobile pickup to serve a high-traffic corridor and achieve a 2-year payback on investment.

Key Objectives

  • Capture the 70,000+ student and faculty market with convenient, high-quality Southern comfort food.
  • Achieve Year 1 revenue of $3,650,000 and EBITDA of $1,730,000.
  • Establish the location as a community hub for university sports and events.
[dynamic_pic9]

2. Products & Services: What does the franchise unit sell?

The unit sells authentic Southern comfort food, anchored by its signature fried chicken and 'made-from-scratch' biscuits. The menu is supplemented by a range of classic sides and drinks, with a significant revenue stream from large-scale catering orders for university events and local organizations. This product mix is designed to drive both high-volume daily sales and larger, high-margin catering contracts.

Primary Revenue Streams

  • Fried Chicken Sales: Projected at $1,400,000 in the first year.
  • Biscuit Sales: Forecasted to generate $600,000 in year one.
  • Catering Orders: Expected to add $300,000 in revenue, starting from mid-year.
[dynamic_pic10]

3. Market Analysis: Who are the target customers?

The primary target market consists of the 70,000+ students and faculty at the adjacent university, who seek convenient and affordable meal options. A secondary segment includes daily commuters on the high-traffic University Boulevard and local residents in East Orlando. A key niche to dominate is sports fans and event attendees at the nearby arena, positioning the unit as the go-to 'Tailgate Headquarters.'

Customer Segments

  • University Students & Faculty: Seeking speed, quality, and value.
  • Local Commuters & Residents: Attracted by drive-thru convenience.
  • Sports Fans & Event Goers: Targeted with catering and game-day specials.
[dynamic_pic11]

4. Marketing & Sales Plan: How will the unit attract customers?

Customer acquisition will be driven by a mix of hyper-local digital marketing and community engagement, funded in part by the 3.0% marketing fee. This includes geo-fenced social media ads targeting the university campus, a mobile app with a loyalty program to drive repeat business, and strategic partnerships with university athletic boosters. A franchise unit marketing plan template for local events will guide outreach to high schools and community groups for catering.

Go-to-Market Strategy

  • Digital Outreach: Geo-fenced ads and a robust loyalty app.
  • Community Partnerships: Become the official caterer for university and local sports.
  • In-Store Promotions: Drive traffic with game-day specials and student discounts.
[dynamic_pic12]

5. Management & Organization: Who will run the franchise unit?

The unit will be led by an experienced General Manager with an annual salary of $82,000, responsible for all day-to-day operations and upholding franchise brand standards. They will oversee an Assistant Manager, multiple Shift Supervisors, and a team of Line Cooks and Cashiers. This structure is designed for high-volume operations, ensuring consistent quality and service speed, especially during peak hours.

Core Management Team

  • General Manager: Oversees all operations and financial performance.
  • Assistant Manager: Supports the GM and manages daily shifts.
  • Shift Supervisors: Ensures quality control and team productivity.
[dynamic_pic13]

6. Financial Plan & Metrics: What is the financial case for the unit?

The financial model requires significant upfront capital, including $600,000 for leasehold improvements and $400,000 for kitchen equipment, but projects a rapid return. With first-year revenue forecasted at $3,650,000 and an EBITDA of $1,730,000, the unit is expected to reach its breakeven point in just 4 months and achieve full payback in 2 years. Key performance indicators for QSR franchise success, like labor costs and food costs, are defintely managed to protect store-level margins.

Key Financials

  • Total Startup Investment: Includes a $35,000 franchise fee.
  • Breakeven & Payback: Achieved in 4 months and 2 years, respectively.
  • Franchise Fees: Based on a 4.0% royalty fee and 3.0% marketing fee on gross sales.

Stunning Storytelling
Format: Kindle
Excellent. I read The Help on a whim all those years ago and was spellbound by the author's ability to weave a complex story across multiple narrators. When I'd heard that her second novel was coming out, I added it to my library wishlist as fast as I could. Then, the second I got word it was available, I couldn't help but immediately dive in... and, because her first novel made such an impression upon me, I had so much trust in the author's ability to deliver a story that I hadn't even bothered to read the blurb. Going in blind into the Calamity Club was a discovery! I was charmed, entertained, amused, and once again, spellbound by Stockett's ability to shift between narrators. One, a somewhat sheltered but very bright and kindhearted woman Birdie. And the other, a charming and very intelligent 11-year-old seemingly orphaned girl, Meg. But beyond this, her ability to weave together a story featuring the fringes of society, giving people -- women, of various walks of life -- a voice in an era where women might have the vote, but are still subjected to a variety of society norms, laws, and double standards, is still very compelling. I adored Meg, and I was so invested in seeing how things would turn out for her. And the strong female cast that Stockett features here only adds to the story's strengths. Having read a few comments here on length, while I agree the story is a little long and the try-fail cycle of getting the underground business off the ground may feel pointless for some, it didn't bother me and only served to showcase the strength of the women. There were so many characters in this book that one could examine closer, from the aching pain of Rory's story to the quiet pain of the accidental loss of someone struggling with emotional struggles and alcoholism to the desperation of destitution, and the lengths one might go just to survive. There's so much within these pages to mine and consider, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only critique is that I felt it ended so abruptly! I wanted just one further chapter, a glimpse of Meg's future... Still: an excellent read, and the Acknowledgements/Author's Note on the research involved in this one was one that made me think about how far we've come... and the direction of where we might go in the future.

Un-Putdown-Able
Format: Kindle
Wonderful book! It’s intriguing, heartfelt and funny as hell. There may be a few loose ends they are too easily wrapped up but honestly, it doesn’t detract from the overall impact of the book. I have to say that the story is enhanced by the Audible version, which is something I rarely say because I usually need to see the words in print. But the two readers of the book are superb and add a lot of depth to the characters. Honestly, if there’s a movie made of this book, I will probably be disappointed in the actors who portray the characters of Birdie and Meg because they won’t be as good as Jenna Lamia and January Lavoy who narrated this book for Audible.

Trying times in Oxford Mississippi in 1933
Format: Kindle
The Calamity Club features a cast of strong women and several weak men. The official charitable women are not charitable and the unofficial ones are courageous and are filled with good will. Stockett weaves a long tale of poverty, desperation, determination and sisterly love. Only two sets of sisters are blood related but those who are not, bond by working together for a common purpose. Stockett serves up humor and pathos in equal measure with a dash or two of realism. Her character development makes The Calamity Club well worth reading Like The Help, a screenplay should be forthcoming.

So Good!
Format: Hardcover
Some parts of this are reminiscent of The Help, but it is a brand new story. Even though it appears to be a LONG book (650 pages), it goes fast and is hard to put down. The story takes place in Mississippi in the 1930's. 24 year old Birdie travels to see her married sister in Oxford for the purpose of getting some financial help for her family. Her sister Frances married into a seemingly wealthy family, which for reasons that soon become clear, has now fallen on hard times. Eleven year old Meg lives in an orphanage and is treated badly by the volunteers that staff it. If her mom isn't going to come back and get her, then she wants to be adopted as soon as possible, but most people want babies, not older children. Charlie turns up at the house where Birdie is staying with her sister's family. She's bright and helpful, but what's her real story? How are they all connected? This story is at times hilarious and at other times heartbreaking. It has its share of villains, but most of the characters are likeable and you want them to succeed. Just HOW they succeed is the heart of the book, and I won't tell you and spoil the surprise. This is well worth reading, though, and I strongly recommend it.
