Founded in the summer of 1972 by a few friends as a modest celebration, the Southern Decadence festival has since grown into one of New Orleans's largest annual tourist events.

The multiday extravaganza features street parties, drag contests, dancing, drinking, and bead tosses, culminating with a boisterous parade through the French Quarter. With over 200,000 participants--predominantly LGBT+--these unbridled, pre-Labor Day festivities now generate millions of dollars in revenue.

Howard Philips Smith and Frank Perez's Southern Decadence in New Orleans brings together an astounding array of materials to provide the first comprehensive, historical look at Southern Decadence. In an engaging account spanning five decades, the authors combine a trove of rare memorabilia from the event's founders, early photographs and film stills, newspaper and magazine articles, interviews with longtime participants, a list of all the parades and grand marshals, as well as reproductions of early Southern Decadence invitations. Throughout, the authors explore the pivotal moments and public perceptions related to the festival--including the myths and conjecture that often inaccurately characterized it--and provide an in-depth narrative detailing how a small party in the Faubourg Trem grew into a worldwide destination predominantly for gay men.

Lauded by city leaders as the second-most profitable festival in New Orleans (outshone only by Mardi Gras), Southern Decadence emanates an air of frivolity that masks its enormous impact on the culture and economy of the Crescent City. But with such growth comes the challenge of maintaining the original spirit of camaraderie while managing expanding administrative and logistical responsibilities. Southern Decadence in New Orleans serves as a historical record that helps ensure the future of the celebration remains forever linked to the joyous impulse of its humble beginnings.--Leon C. Miller, Louisiana Research Collection, Tulane University

Perfect book with a strong research basis presented in an age-appropriate and fun way
Format: Board book
Fantastic, research-based book - I love the clear detailing of specific strategies (not just "use strategies" like other books often have) and it's written at a level that is easy to understand for a variety of ages. It's also pleasant to read as an adult, which you can't say about many didactic books like this. Illustrations are very cute. I can already tell this will be a powerful book in our arsenal!

Most Useful and Applicable Toddler Book I’ve Found
Format: Kindle
Goodwin’s series continues to be one of my favorite parenting tools I’ve found. While my toddler loves the images and messaging, Goodwin’s applicable and usable tip list in the back of her books is the secret sauce that sets her apart. A must for caregivers of young children!

Perfect toddler book for teaching big emotions and calm down techniques in a simple, visual way
Format: Board book, Format: Board book
What I received / first impressions: This is a picture book written for toddlers and young children that walks through what big emotions feel like, where you feel them in your body, and what to do when they show up. It is written in a way that is easy for kids to follow along with a parent and includes practical techniques they can actually use in the moment. What I liked: - Perfectly written for young kids: The language and pacing are just right for toddlers to stay engaged and understand without getting lost. - Teaches body awareness around emotions: I love that it helps children recognize where in their body they feel emotions, which is such a foundational skill for emotional regulation. - Covers a full range of emotions: It addresses big feelings that come from both difficult and happy moments, and acknowledges that emotions show up differently for everyone which is an important and inclusive message. - Interactive and easy to practice at home: This is something you can do together as a family, not just read and set aside. The techniques are simple enough for little ones to actually try. - Parent tips included in the back: The added section for parents on how to integrate the techniques into daily life is a thoughtful bonus that makes this more than just a read-aloud. - Great addition alongside other behavior books: We are fans of the Best Behavior series like Teeth Are Not for Biting and Hands Are Not for Hitting and this fits right in alongside those in both tone and approach. What I didn't like / concerns: Nothing. This book delivered exactly what we needed and then some. Who I think this is best for: - Parents of toddlers and young children looking for a practical, visual tool for emotional regulation - Families who already enjoy behavior and feelings books and want to add to their collection - Anyone looking for a book they can actively use with their child rather than just read to them - Teachers or caregivers working with young children on identifying and managing big emotions Bottom line: This book has genuinely helped us work through big emotions at home in a way our child can understand and participate in. It is visual, approachable, and gives both kids and parents real tools to use together. We are so glad we found it and it has earned a permanent spot in our regular reading rotation. Would I buy again? Yes, and would gift it to other parents of young children without hesitation.
