After releasing an album with Shihad in 2014, Jon began to search for ideas for the second chapter in the critically acclaimed Adults journey, eventually gathering inspiration from his wedding in Khartoum, Sudan and the traditional music, Aghani-Al-Banat, performed as part of the ceremony.

Aghani-Al-Banat literally translates to ‘girls music’ and is one of the only aspects of Sudanese music that deals exclusively with women, their lives and their issues. After completing a recording session in Khartoum with an all-female group of musicians, Jon bought the recordings home to begin structuring an album around them, inviting co-producer Devin Abrams (Pacific Heights/Shapeshifter) to help shape the sound of what would become HAJA. In order to find a title that encompassed what Jon wanted to convey with this album, he looked to the language of Sudan – with the word Haja being a respectful term for an older, more experienced woman in Arabic.

Much like the first Adults album, HAJA features an exciting cast of collaborators, including upcoming New Zealand artists Chelsea Jade (Boomtown), Estère (Bloodlines), JessB (Bloodlines), Miloux (Because Of You), and Raiza Biza (Boomtown/That Gold), along with the award-winning Aaradhna (That Gold)  and recent breakthrough artist Kings (Take it on the Chin). These contributions help make up the eight tracks that are HAJA, which is one of the freshest sounding, most intriguing records to come out of New Zealand this year.

My dogs loved it, but it doesn't hold up.
My dogs absolutely love this ball! The moment I took it out of the package, they were already trying to play with it. The vibration is strong, and on hardwood floors it moves around fairly well. It keeps the dogs interested and does a good job of rolling around. The blue outer ring is made of a mildly tacky, hard rubber. Within about 30 seconds of rolling around, it had already picked up pet hair and lint from the floor. That said, the rubber feels fairly durable. I have some heavy chewers, so I'll update my review later to let everyone know how well it holds up over time. The charging process is a little unusual and somewhat concerning. To charge the ball, you have to remove it from the rubber shell, unscrew it, and pull out the motor assembly. While doing this, I got some kind of grease on my hand, so I would recommend being careful not to fully remove the motor when charging. It does use a USB-C charging port, and a small charging cable is included. Overall, my dogs are having a great time with it so far. I'll update this review if anything changes or if the ball doesn't hold up long-term. UPDATE: It is 2 days later, the rubber net around the ball has lost a lot of it's rigidity and no longer holds the inner ball in place. My dogs are able to easily remove the inner ball, which is hard and small enough for them to swallow. This toy has been taken away as much as they have loved it, as it's now a choking hazard. As a result, my rating has gone from 4 stars to 2.

Highly Entertaining Toy That Keeps Dogs Thrilled, But Smart Pups Can Disassemble It
This interactive ball is an absolute hit with my dogs, and watching them play with it has been incredibly entertaining. Right out of the box, the internal mechanism charged up very fast, so we were able to start a play session almost immediately. It blinks blue when charging and solid green when charged. The unpredictable moving and bouncing motions caught my dogs' attention right away, and they love chasing it around the room. My only critique is that it didn't take them very long to figure out how to pop the inner motorized ball completely out of the outer cage. Luckily, the materials are genuinely durable; even though they separated the pieces, they haven't destroyed or damaged either part yet. It's great fun to watch, but you'll definitely want to keep an eye on smart pups who figure out how to open it up.
