The world’s smallest mature bird, with most of the 300+ known species ranging in size from an astonishing 5cm to 13cm in length, the hummingbird is known as such due to the humming sound made by its rapidly beating wings. In some species, those tiny little wings can beat at up to 80 times per second! During courtship displays, that can go up to 100 beats per second!

The rate of wingbeats allows the hummingbird to hover, like a helicopter, and even fly backwards, but they also enable it to travel at incredible speeds. The hummingbird has recorded speeds of well over 50km/h! During mating season, a male hummingbird has been known to descend from on high toward a female at an incredible 80km/h! All that exercise consumes some serious energy, but the hummingbird has an extraordinary metabolism – indeed, it has the highest metabolic rate of all vertebrates!

To enable hovering and super-quick flight, the hummingbird consumes oxygen at approximately ten times the level of elite athletes! A hummingbird hovering above flowers, enjoying their sweet nectar, may be an awe-inspiring sight, but that natural sugar is vital to a creature that burns the equivalent of 600,000 kilojoules per day. That’s about ten times the energy consumed by someone running a marathon!

The hummingbird is also well known for its gorgeous, iridescent plumage, particularly in males. Used to attract mates, and assist in the competition for food, the natural pigments of the hummingbird’s feathers are enhanced with prismal cells. When sunlight hits those cells from certain angles, it causes dramatic changes in the intensity of the colours.
