Here may be found the headhearted chanteuse, stinging of romance but single-mindedly devoted to business; the American millionairess in search of an exciting fifth husband; the gigolo ruthlessly sell his wares; and the gaping tourists who love it all and understand very little of what goes on beneath the glittering surface. When murder happens at the Flea Club, a most unsuitable element is added in the person of Dr Mary Finney, the rough-textured medical missionary and amateur detective. Her normal sphere is Africa, but she happens to be in Paris receiving medals for her medical work and she is much admired by the Sûreté for earlier cases. She wades into the Flea Club with characteristic energy and intelligence. The result is a murder novel that charms and diverts.
