Mid-Century West German Lava Glaze Vase – Red Fat Lava Pottery (12 cm)

A striking mid-century West German pottery vase featuring the dramatic glaze effects that made 1960s–1970s German ceramics so distinctive and collectable.

This compact, rounded vase displays a vibrant, fat lava glaze in rich tones of fiery red, amber, caramel, and deep brown, flowing organically over the curved body. The glossy red glaze contrasts beautifully with the textured cream and darker base tones, creating the volcanic drip effect typical of West German studio pottery from this period.

The vase has a pleasing, squat, bulbous form with a narrow neck, giving it a sculptural presence despite its smaller size. Pieces like this were produced by several well-known German ceramic houses and were designed to add bold colour and texture to modern interiors.

Perfect for styling on a mid-century sideboard, coffee table, shelving, or cabinet, either on its own or grouped with other West German ceramics.

Origin: West Germany
Period: 1960s–1970s
Material: Glazed ceramic pottery

Dimensions:
Height: 12 cm
Width: 12 cm

Condition:
Good vintage condition with light age-related wear consistent with period use.

A beautiful example of classic West German “fat lava” pottery, ideal for collectors of mid-century ceramics and retro interiors.
