Jack London (1876-1916) remains one of the most widely read American writers, known for his naturalist fiction, socialist novels and essays, journalism, and the many adventures that he shared with the world. London was also an accomplished photographer, producing nearly twelve thousand photographs during his lifetime. Jack London, Photographer, the first book devoted to London's photography, reveals a vital dimension of his artistry, barely known until now.

London's subjects included such peoples as the ragged homeless of London's East End and the freezing refugees of the Russo-Japanese War, the latter photographed on assignment for the Hearst Syndicate. For Collier's magazine, London wrote his eyewitness account of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire and returned two weeks later with his camera to document a city in ruins but slowly recovering. During his voyage aboard the Snark, London produced humane images of the South Seas islanders that contrasted dramatically with the period's stereotypical portraits of indigenous peoples. In 1914 he documented the U.S. invasion of Veracruz during the Mexican Revolution. Although some of his images were used in newspaper and magazine stories and in his books The People of the Abyss and The Cruise of the Snark, the majority have remained unpublished until now.

The volume's more than two hundred photographs were printed from the original negatives in the California State Parks collection and from the original photographs in albums at the Huntington Library. They are reproduced here as duotones from silver gelatin prints. The general and chapter introductions place London's photographs in the context of his writings and his times.

London lived during the first true mass-media era, when the use of photographic images ushered in a new way of covering the news. With his discerning eye, London recorded historical moments through the faces and bodies of the people who lived them, creating memorable portraits of individuals whose cultural differences pale beside their common humanity.

Stays put and does the job
Style: Contempo
I hate clutter. That includes my sink area. This holds my oxo scrubber and a sponge with ease. It also lets everything drain nice so there is no issue with slime or smell that other caddies have. Looks nice and amazingly the suction cups work. So far the finish is holding up and for what it is, it does its job. Looks nice.

Oh how I love this little Gem
Color: Silver
I needed this badly as I often got irritated with the kids for putting the sponge back in the soap/scrubber dish and it was always full of water. I looked at options on the side of a sink but none were quite right for our set up...Then I saw this. What I love is it is not one more thing on the counter. It is below down in the sink. And yet, it is handy. Into it I have the essentials I use so many times a day right there handy and they drain on their own. This adhered well because I used rubbing alcohol to clean the area, then waited several hours before adhering set up to sink about 10 pm at night. Letting it set over night and in the morning I remembered the tip another reviewer wrote to push the tray down STRONG until it CLICKS into the holders. Then it was completely sturdy and firm and I've used it long enough to know I'm very happy for this small perfectly practical way to hold my sink tools. So glad I chose this much less expensive simple one.

Highly Recommend
Color: Silver
Love this holder of all the things! We purchased this 4 years ago and it has work great, rust-free, until my husband piled two pots on it and it broke last night. I am immediately purchasing another one. It is very easy to install and stays put, no movement at all.

Works well
Color: Silver
The stainless steel caddy quality is fine, the sticker was easy to install on the inside of my stainless steel sink. I initially used the small movable arm to hang on the hooks, and it did not keep the caddy in place. Anytime it was hit, it fell off or tilted off the hooks. Customer service followed up with me on my purchase, gave me the correct instructions with a picture, and I was able to snap the caddy into the hooks. They were responsive, listened to my concerns and answered my questions, and now it works great. I would recommend this.
