Commemorated November 13.

Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople, one of the Three Hierarchs [January 30], was born at Antioch in about the year 347 into the family of a military commander. His father, Secundus, died soon after the birth of his son. His mother, Anthusa, widowed at twenty years of age, did not seek to remarry but rather devoted all her efforts to the raising of her son in Christian piety. The youth studied under the finest philosophers and rhetoricians. But, scorning the vain disciplines of pagan knowledge, the future hierarch turned himself to the profound study of Holy Scripture and prayerful contemplation.

St Meletius, Bishop of Antioch (February 12), loved John like a son, guided him in the Faith, and in the year 367 baptized him. After three years John was tonsured as a Reader. When St Meletius had been sent into exile by the emperor Valens in the year 372, John and Theodore (afterwards Bishop of Mopsuestia) studied under the experienced instructors of ascetic life, the presbyters Flavian and Diodorus of Tarsus.

The highly refined Diodorus had particular influence upon the youth. When John's mother died, he embraced monasticism, which he called the true philosophy. Soon John and his friend Basil were being considered as candidates for the episcopal office, and they decided to withdraw into the wilderness to avoid this. While St John avoided the episcopal rank out of humility, he secretly assisted in Basil's consecration. During this period St John wrote his Six Discourses on the Priesthood, a great work of Orthodox pastoral theology.

The saint spent four years struggling in the wilderness, living the ascetic life under the guidance of an experienced spiritual guide. And here he wrote three books entitled, Against the Opponents of Those Attracted to the Monastic Life, and a collection entitled, A Comparison of the Monk with the Emperor (also known as Comparison of Imperial Power, Wealth and Eminence, with the True and Christian Wisdom-Loving Monastic Life), both works which are marked by a profound reflection of the worthiness of the monastic vocation. For two years, the saint lived in a cave in complete silence, but was obliged to return to Antioch to recover his health. St Meletius, the Bishop of Antioch, ordained him deacon in the year 381.

The following years were devoted to work on new theological writings: Concerning Providence (To the Ascetic Stagirios), Book Concerning Virginity, To a Young Widow (2 discourses), and the Book of St Babylos, and Against Julian and the Pagans. In the year 386 St John was ordained presbyter by Bishop Flavian of Antioch. St John was a splendid preacher, and his inspired words earned him the name Golden-Mouthed (Chrysostom).

For twelve years the saint preached in church, usually twice a week, but sometimes daily, deeply stirring the hearts of his listeners. In his pastoral zeal to provide Christians with a better understanding of Holy Scripture, St John employed hermeneutics, an interpretation and analysis of the Word of God (i.e. exegesis). Among his exegetical works are commentaries on entire books of the Holy Scripture (Genesis, the Psalter, the Gospels of Matthew and John, the Epistles of the Apostle Paul), and also many homilies on individual texts of the Holy Bible, but also instructions on the Feastdays, laudations on the Saints, and also apologetic (i.e. defensive) homilies (against Anomoeans, Judaizers and pagans).

As a priest, St John zealously fulfilled the Lord's command to care for the needy. Under St John, the Antiochian Church provided sustenance each day to as many as 3,000 virgins and widows, not including in this number the shut-ins, wanderers and the sick. St John began his commentary on Genesis at the beginning of Great Lent in 388, preaching thirty-two homilies during the forty day period. During Holy Week he spoke of how Christ was betrayed, and about the Cross. During Bright Week, his pastoral discourse was devoted to the Resurrection. His exegesis of the Book of Genesis was concluded only at the end of October (388). At Pascha in the following year the saint began his homilies on the Gospel of John, and toward the end of the year 389 he took up the Gospel of Matthew. In the year 391 the Antioch Christians listened to his commentary on the Epistles of the holy Apostle Paul to the Romans and to the Corinthians. In 393 he explained the Epistles to the Galatians, the Ephesians, Timothy, Titus, and the Psalms.

In his homily on the Epistle to the Ephesians, St John denounced a schism in Antioch, I tell you and I witness before you, that to tear asunder the Church means nothing less than to fall into heresy. The Church is the house of the heavenly Father, one Body and one Spirit. The fame of the holy preacher grew, and in the year 397 with the death of Archbishop Nectarius of Constantinople, successor to St Gregory the Theologian, St John Chrysostom was summoned from Antioch, and elected to the See of Constantinople.

At the capital, the holy arch pastor was not able to preach as often as he had at Antioch. Many matters awaited the saint's attention, and he began with the most important -- the spiritual perfection of the priesthood. He himself was the best example of this. The financial means apportioned for the archbishop were channeled by the saint into the upkeep of several hospices for the sick and two hostels for pilgrims. He fasted strictly and ate very little food, and usually refused invitations to dine because of his delicate stomach.

The saint's zeal in spreading the Christian Faith extended not only to the inhabitants of Constantinople, but also to Thrace to include Slavs and Goths, and to Asia Minor and the Pontine region. He established a bishop for the Bosphorus Church in the Crimea. St John sent off zealous missionaries to Phoenicia, to Persia, and to the Scythians, to convert pagans to Christ. He also wrote letters to Syria to bring back the Marcionites into the Church, and he accomplished this. Preserving the unity of the Church, the saint would not permit a powerful Gothic military commander, who wanted the emperor to reward his bravery in battle, to open an Arian church at Constantinople.

The saint exerted much effort in enhancing the splendor of the church services: he compiled a Liturgy, he introduced antiphonal singing for the all-night Vigil, and he wrote several prayers for the rite of anointing the sick with oil. The saintly hierarch denounced the dissolute morals of people in the capital, especially at the imperial court, irrespective of person. When the empress Eudoxia connived to confiscate the last properties of the widow and children of a disgraced dignitary, the saint rose to their defense.

The arrogant empress would not relent, and nursed a grudge against the arch pastor. Eudoxia's hatred of the saint blazed forth anew when malefactors told her that the saint apparently had her in mind during his sermon on vain women. A court was convened composed of hierarchs who had been justly condemned by Chrysostom: Theophilus of Alexandria, Bishop Severian of Gabala, who had been banished from the capital because of improprieties, and others.

This court of judgment declared St John deposed, and that he be executed for his insult to the empress. The emperor decided on exile instead of execution. An angry crowd gathered at the church, resolved to defend their pastor. In order to avoid a riot, St John submitted to the authorities. That very night there was an earthquake at Constantinople. The terrified Eudoxia urgently requested the emperor to bring the saint back, and promptly sent a letter to the banished pastor, beseeching him to return. Once more, in the capital church, the saint praised the Lord in a short talk, For All His Ways.

The slanderers fled to Alexandria. But after only two months a new denunciation provoked the wrath of Eudoxia. In March 404, an unjust council was convened, decreeing the exile of St John. Upon his removal from the capital, a fire reduced the church of Hagia Sophia and also the Senate building to ashes. Devastating barbarian incursions soon followed, and Eudoxia died in October 404. Even pagans regarded these events as God's punishment for the unjust judgment against the saint. In Armenia, the saint strove all the more to encourage his spiritual children. In numerous letters (245 are preserved) to bishops in Asia, Africa, Europe and particularly to his friends in Constantinople, St John consoled the suffering, guiding and giving support to his followers. In the winter of 406 St John was confined to his bed with sickness, but his enemies were not to be appeased.

From the capital came orders to transfer St John to desolate Pityus in Abkhazia on the Black Sea. Worn out by sickness, the saint began his final journey under military escort, traveling for three months in the rain and frost. He never arrived at his place of exile, for his strength failed him at Comana. At the crypt of St Basiliscus (May 22), St John was comforted by a vision of the martyr, who said, Despair not, brother John! Tomorrow we shall be together. After receiving the Holy Mysteries, the hierarch fell asleep in the Lord on September 14, 407.

His last words were, Glory to God for all things! The holy relics of St John Chrysostom were solemnly transferred to Constantinople in the year 438. The disciple of St John, the venerable Isidore of Pelusium (February 4), wrote: he house of David is grown strong, and the house of Saul enfeebled. He is victor over the storms of life, and has entered into heavenly repose. Although he died on September 14, St John's celebration was transferred to this day because of the Feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. St John Chrysostom is also celebrated on January 27 and January 30.

Awesome robo-vac/mop with rotating mop head/no pads.
Size: E25 Black
I owned a Narwal Freo for 1 year and it died right after the warranty period was up. Tried replacing the battery but that did not fix the issue so I had to purchase another one. I noticed this eufy had high reviews and the 1 star reviews seemed to be just isolated issues so I purchased this one. Right away I noticed that the instructions/setup was much more simple. Second this one has a big wide mop roller on the front and after mopping I didn't see the mop streaks in circular patterns on the floor like I did with the Narwal as it had two rotating mop heads on the front so the single mop roller seems to be a better solution. Setup consisted of removing protective wrappers off of the tanks and base station, filling up the clean water tank, installing the detergent bottle and plugging it in. Next I downloaded the app and connecting the vac/mop to my network. This was SIMPLE to say the least. From there I could have just clicked clean on the app and it would clean the entire house. However, mapping gives you more flexibility when planning your cleaning ritual. You can define no go zones and clean rooms in any order you choose. I have a shedding dog so I have a separate robovac to clean up the dog hair prior to vac/mopping. This is a MUST with any robovac/mop combo as the dog hair on the floor will mix with the water and detergent and eventually prevent the mop from doing a good job. It will make a mess in the bottom tray of the base station too. I learned this through experience and reading all the one star reviews from customers. Robovac only cleaners last a LONG time. I had one that is still working great for over 3 years. All I had to do was replace the battery so it doesn't have to pause the job to recharge. So the mapping only took 4 minutes and it was pretty accurate. After the mapping I defined the room boundaries and renamed the rooms. Next I sent it off to clean and it did a FABULOUS JOB! No streaks and the floors are clean. The noise level is really low and more quiet than the Narwal. The other thing I noticed is it didn't use up much water to rinse the mop while cleaning. The Narwal used a lot of water and I was always dumping dirty water and adding fresh. I will always have a robomop and robovac as they save me so much time by not having to do this job twice a week. Connectivity to my network is excellent as it's in a location far from the router. This vac/mop is a good value for the money if IT LASTS BEYOND 1 YEAR. I will update this review as necessary and if it fails right after the warranty period I will report and downgrade this review to 1 star. These companies need to learn the importance of reliability and correct these issues. When I first reviewed the NARWAL it had almost a perfect 5 star review from all customers. After the year was up and it failed that star rating went down to 3+ stars. Most reviews reported their robovac/mop just died like mine did after the warranty period. I downgraded my review and reported the issue. I'm hoping this one will last because at the moment I am VERY satisfied with it like most customers. This model has been on the market much longer at the time of purchase so I would suspect if there were any reliability flaws they would have been addressed and corrected by now. We shall see. At this time I highly recommend!!

Excellent Robot Vacuum, Especially for the Price
Size: 11S, Size: 11S
I have been an iRobot Roomba buyer since 2007. My last Roomba bit the dust this month, and I did a ton of research before buying a replacement. I went with the Eufy for a few reasons: price point, cleaning power, quietness, and sleek design. Price: Very reasonable. Almost reasonable enough that I'd consider getting another one for my second floor. For now I'll just carry it upstairs. Cleaning power: This thing sucks... It's suction is much stronger than my Roombas have had. It picks up so much dust and pet hair. We do a full vacuum every other week with my Dyson, so I think of the robot vacuum as a supplemental vacuum. I was shocked at how much was in the dustbin after it's inaugural cleaning! The picture attached to this is from that cleaning. It also gets a ton of dust in the little dust filter. In one of the video reviews I watched, the reviewer said it didn't pick up anything in that dust filter... So maybe my carpet is particularly dusty, because it has a thick layer after each cleaning. Quietness: I work from my home office, and this thing is quiet enough that I don't even turn it off during conference calls. This might be the thing I am most impressed with. My last Roomba was LOUD-- you couldn't even have a conversation with someone in the same room, let alone someone on speakerphone. Sleek design: I love/hate this. It definitely looks modern and cool, and more like an art piece than an appliance, but it shows all my finger prints, and now I keep a glasses cleaning cloth nearby so I can rub it down. I suppose if I only use the remote and never pick it up, this won't be an issue. A few considerations: I was hoping to find a robot vacuum that wouldn't eat my carpets' tassels, but I don't think that vacuum exists. I have only used the Eufy 4 times so far, and it doesn't always get its brushes wrapped around the long tassels, but it does sometimes. It seems to realize it sooner than my Roomba did at least. The Roomba would sometimes rip gobs of them off in a single cleaning. I try to tuck them under the edge of the rug and that doesn't seem to bother Eufy. It has pulled off probably 2 tassels so far. The cleaning pattern seems pretty random. I saw some other vacuums that chart out complex maps of your home, and Eufy doesn't seem to do that. But, it doesn't seem to matter, because it still hits every spot in the rooms. I'm a little concerned about durability. My Roombas ran for many, many years with easily replaceable parts. We'll have to see if Eufy has the same longevity. All in all- I'm very happy with my purchase and definitely recommend it!

Robot Vacuum With Decent Cleaning but Too Much Maintenance
Size: E28
This robot vacuum was fairly simple to set up, and the battery life is actually pretty good. When it comes to cleaning, it does a solid job picking up dirt and debris, and overall the suction works well for everyday vacuuming. However, the navigation and sensors really missed the mark for me. It struggled to recognize certain items around my house. For example, the mat under my cat’s food bowl kept getting caught because the vacuum didn’t detect it properly. It also had trouble recognizing furniture like my ottomans and would repeatedly run into them. Another issue was how it handled different floor types. It’s supposed to be able to recognize surfaces like carpet versus hard flooring, but that didn’t always work correctly. At one point it even tried cleaning my carpet when it shouldn’t have. It also struggled with room detection and didn’t consistently recognize different areas of my home, even when placed directly in them. I bought this hoping for more of a “set it and forget it” type of appliance since I work a lot and wanted something that would keep my floors clean without much attention. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. I often had to redo the mapping or move the vacuum around so it could recognize spaces and objects properly. There were a few positives though. The app is very helpful and easy to use, and the vacuum communicates clearly through notifications. It lets you know when things like the water level or cleaning bin need attention, which I appreciated. Maintenance like emptying it isn’t required very often either. It’s also a little noisy. Not extremely loud, but it talks frequently and you definitely know when it’s running. Since I work third shift and sleep during the day, that was a bit frustrating. Another issue was that it struggled to cross small entry thresholds between rooms. Even a small lip between rooms would sometimes stop it from moving into another space. In the end, I decided to return it. While it does vacuum fairly well, the navigation issues and constant adjustments made it more of a hassle than a convenience. For the price, I expected something more hands-off, and unfortunately it required more attention than it was worth for me.

Great and Easy to Use!
Size: 11S
Background: I have a shedding dog, so I bought this in hopes that by running it every-day, it would pick up on some of the dog hair on the floor. What I like: -VERY easy to use. -easy to follow instructions -has a sticker on the bottom so if it ever stops and beeps, you can flip it over and it says exactly what the beeps mean (one beep means one thing, two beeps means another--which is SUPER helpful!). -color on top clearly shows what mode it is in (blue-ready to go, orange-needs to charge, red-problem to fix-such as emptying the tray). -very quiet. I can work on stuff with it in the room and it does not bother me at all (my dog also does not mind it). -works great on white carpet and easily transitions from my living room to dining room (which has a slight bump). -when its low on battery, it does not die where it is at, it just turns off the vacuum then finds the home doc and charges itself. -just works really well. I run it everyday and I am impressed by how much stuff it gets (especially when it goes under things such as the couch). -if it gets caught on a cord, it usually takes 5-10 seconds but then it stops the suctioning and moves away (releasing the cord or other item). However if you have a small cord you should put it up (and you should regardless, I just noticed it doing this a few times and thought it was neat, but I do try to pick up all cords). What could be improved: -nothing really in particular to this. -It does not work well on anything black, but this is true for all robot vacuums. It sometimes gets stuck when it goes on the black carpet we have with the black chairs (I suspect because it can not detect them), but this has not happened often. My dog has a black mat for her food and water and it always bumps into it and spills the water, but again, this would occur with any robot vacuum. -Also, make sure the doc is against a wall because otherwise it will move and never charge (self explanatory, but I did not do the first time and it kept trying to doc and was just pushing the doc around the floor). -Finally, you do have to dump out the vacuum particles almost every time you run it (if you do a full circle/battery cycle). It is really easy to dump and beeps when it needs to be emptied. Again, nothing really negative, just something to note. Overall, I really like this! It does a nice job cleaning up the dog hair and other things that get on my floor and saves me a lot of time not vacuuming daily. If you have a dog, I would watch them with this first before you use it. My dog was initially scared of it but sniffed it's "butt" and now they are cool and she does not mind it at all. Pleased with this product and would recommend! :) **UPDATE** On another note, Eufy has amazing customer service! I received an email from them addressing each of my "what could be improved" components with more information on the product. Very impressed.

ROB is amazing.
Size: E25 Black
I have to first explain that I have named my E25, his name is now ROB and will be referred to as ROB going forward. ROB has been an amazing addition to our family and yes I said Family. ROB was easy to set up, all instructions were clear and easy to follow. The first day, I followed ROB everywhere afraid he would get stuck on a rug, or would have difficulty making it over the transitions of our flooring. But ROB had no problems what so ever. And honestly, I found myself amazed at the quality and endurance of ROB. He was jumping over transitions, flipping from mop to vacuum at the proper times and would suck up a dog hair bunny from 3 feet away! As a home with 2 big dogs (over 100 pounds each) that looses enough fur to make a new sweater everyday, ROB has done an amazing job! It’s been a week with ROB and I have found that he takes no prisoners, there was an area that I didn’t want him going into because I had boxes laid out, I was lazy and just made a make shift barrier so he wouldn’t proceed through the area, but ROB was persistent and was able to move the barrier so he could do his job. So, if you want a robot that will jump a shoe wall, ROB is your man! ROB navigates around a dog toys, around dog bowls, and can even get rid of the doggy dribbles when they drink. I have ROB set up to vacuum during the day and at night, he vacuums and mops. My 2 dog sons and my family are all happy with ROB as he is quiet and doesn’t scare them. Most days they just watch ROB do his magic on our floors. ROB also cleans himself, he will run home to clean his butt after mopping and will empty his own debris from his vacuuming. I really don’t know how I survived without ROB this long!! I waited 6 months before I finally purchased ROB after seeing his brother BOB in action at my Cousins house. So don’t be like me and wait, just make the purchase. You won’t regret it.
