The just-discovered story of how two enigmatic circus performers and the cultural ferment of the Gilded Age sparked the Black Muslim movement in America

Delving into new archives and uncovering fascinating biographical narratives, secret rituals, and hidden identities, historian Jacob Dorman explains why thousands of Americans were enthralled by the Islamic Orient, and why some came to see Islam as a global antiracist movement uniquely suited to people of African descent in an era of European imperialism, Jim Crow segregation, and officially sanctioned racism.

The Princess and the Prophet tells the story of the Black Broadway performer who, among the world of Arabian acrobats and equestrians, Muslim fakirs, and Wild West shows, discovered in Islam a greater measure of freedom and dignity, and a rebuttal to the racism and parochialism of white America. Overturning the received wisdom that the prophet was born on the East Coast, Dorman has discovered that Noble Drew Ali was born Walter Brister in Kentucky. With the help of his wife, a former lion tamer and "Hindoo" magician herself, Brister renamed himself Prophet Noble Drew Ali and founded the predecessor of the Nation of Islam, the Moorish Science Temple of America, in the 1920s.

With an array of profitable businesses, the "Moors" built a nationwide following of thousands of dues-paying members, swung Chicago elections, and embedded themselves in Chicago's dominant Republican political machine at the height of Prohibition racketeering, only to see their sect descend into infighting in 1929 that likely claimed the prophet's life. This fascinating untold story reveals that cultures grow as much from imagination as inheritance, and that breaking down the artificial silos around various racial and religious cultures helps to understand not only America's hidden past but also its polycultural present.

Truly great quality for tough chewers
I seldom leave reviews, but after years of reading endless reviews for different dpg toy products that claim to be "indestructible" but end up being no match for our sweet but genuinely TOUGH chewer pitbull, I never expect much... so was so pleasantly surprised, no, shocked, by the quality of this WoofBite toy. Please note these photos are after about 3 months of use (and you may notice our dog is laying in a sea of other decimated toys that lasted only days, if not hours). Again, not a big reviewer, and I know no two dogs are the same, but if our experience is any indication, we felt we needed to make this recommendation to other bully breed owners out there who, like us, are skeptical of anything out there claiming to be indestructible. While our dog gets so much joy and takes great pride in the art of destruction, the endless revolving door of buying her new toys translates to lots of money spent. It is nice to finally find a new option to add to our very limited list of brands we will buy for her. Good news is, she still really enjoys playing with this toy and she is enjoying the challenge. I can confidently say this has been a GREAT buy for our spoiled little pitbull and we will be scooping up more for her grandparents house, our summer camp, and some backups just in case these ever become unavailable. Thank you!

Chicken flavor mild kinda just taste spicy plastic but flaverfade quickly. It off-white more than white but it look mostly like picture otherwise. hard and durable but nit hurt teeth. Medium suggested for average human.

Tough Chewer Approved but Not a Forever Toy
Flavor Name: Original, Size: X-Large
I do like this toy for what it is meant to do. It is definitely built for strong chewers and holds up way better than softer toys that get destroyed in minutes. The texture keeps dogs interested and gives them something to really work on, which helps with boredom and can support dental cleaning through chewing. It is one of those “finally something that lasts a bit” kind of toys for heavy chewers. That said, it is not something you just toss in and forget about forever. Like most hard nylon toys, it will wear down over time and should be checked regularly for rough edges or changes in shape. Some dogs will also go through it faster depending on how intense their chewing style is, so replacement will eventually be needed. Girl, this is one of those “it survives the chaos better than most, but you still need to keep an eye on it” situations.
