An exceptional early 20th-century sapphire and diamond cluster ring, set in platinum and dating to the 1910s. At its centre sits a magnificent octagonal-cut sapphire weighing 6.6 carats, framed by a octagonal cluster of old European–cut diamonds totalling approximately 1 carat. The proportions are beautifully judged, with the crisp geometry of the sapphire softened by the gentle sparkle of antique diamonds.

The sapphire is of Sri Lankan (Ceylon) origin and displays natural inclusions. These are not flaws, but hallmarks of an unheated, natural stone, and a reassuring indication that the colour has not been artificially enhanced. The hue is simply wonderful: a rich, saturated blue with life and depth, the kind of colour collectors search for and rarely find especially at this carat weight.

The platinum mount is finely made, with the most wonderful diamond shaped openwork beneath the setting allowing light to move through the stones, a technique characteristic of high-quality rings from this period.
