While the black community struggles to overcome the confinement to poverty, health disparities, the lack of resources, lack of opportunities, and the lack of skill in interpersonal and environmental coping, there is a more important issue that puts our community at risk of these things and needs to be faced. What really happened to the structure of black families and how is this impacting our lives today? If you have been drawn to this workbook, there is something on the inside of you that knows there is a problem within our culture. A problem so big yet so small that weÕve overlooked it! Or maybe weÕve just given up hope that there would ever be a change!! Either way you are here reading this because YOU have a desire to be a part of a change thatÕll be the beginning of knocking down that invisible barrier thatÕs holding our culture back from ever truly coming out of bondage. Restoring black love means restoring black wealth, but before we can restore black love we have to get to the root of whatÕs keeping us incompatible with one another. As a licensed therapist, I have created this workbook, which provides worksheets that can be used alongside my course or individually, as a therapeutic self-help resource. The provided worksheets target key issues that could be keeping you in these cycles of broken relationships, that we see so often in our community. There are so many things that we experience that classify as trauma, and that mixed with the pressures we face on a daily basis, affect our mental health, which in turn affects our relationships. The child that is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth, if you know what I mean. Hurt people hurt people! A key component to any relationship is the ability to be self aware enough to understand how your beliefs and unconscious traumas have shaped your life and how they may be shaping the way you see your significant others life. Understanding and working on self, while being present and aware of your partners needs, allows the relationship to naturally conform to a more lasting and fulfilling relationship. So, this workbook is going to help you navigate through inner work to pre-first date preparedness to long lasting relationships. There has been a statistically significant decline in the nuclear structure of the black family, and as your agent of change, I am determined to restore those strong family bonds we once knew. Let's start working on your lasting and fulfilling relationship!

An essential book on U.S. race and capitalism!
Format: Paperback
One of the most important books on race and capitalism ever written. Such a nuanced study of the California penal system that includes the racist structure of the United States’ criminal justice system, but goes far beyond to analyze how capitalism and profit drive politicians, police, investors, landowners, and working class people—white and Black—to expand the prison system in an age of dropping crime rates. I teach it regularly to undergraduates and graduate students, and it drives fascinating discussions.

Format: Paperback
If anyone has mastered the political economy and geography of prisons in California, it is Ruth Wilson Gilmore in Golden Gulag. Gilmore does a great job of discussing and parceling out the very complex and complicated relationships that exist between capitalism as a system that produces our material world alongside economic crises, and the function of prisons to absorb, manage, relocate and "hide" those very crises in the era of neoliberalism. She also skillfully reminds us over and over that it is black and brown working-class poor communities that bear the brunt of this kind of system that also expresses it's power via white supremacy. I am finding this book very useful and chock-full of interesting information for my current research. People may find the book a difficult read because it loaded with information and technicalities they are unfamiliar with, but these are good reasons to struggle with a text and truly grasp the increasingly intricate processes that determine and guide the world we live in (and the places we may end up locked in!). As Marx said, there is no royal road to science and knowledge.

Format: Paperback
I'm still reading it but its a great book. It makes me think about how much money is invested in keeping poor and people of color populations in prison. The prison industrial complex is no joke. This book provides the studies, chart and details of what I always thought. There's plenty of money to be made keeping the 'right people in prison' and finding new victims such as immigrants and school kids.

This was a good expose on how our government secures monies without you being aware of it for use in their useless game of punishment and the ultimate ruination of the towns in which they place these freaking Hell-holes
