In 1785, James Jarvis (1764Ð1850) suddenly appeared in the Hunting Creek section of Wilkes County, North Carolina. This essay determines the identity of his father by considering all Jarvis taxpayers (and their households) known to have resided south of the Mason-Dixon Line from 1783 to 1785. The author presents historical evidence of military cooperation during the Revolution between inhabitants of Wilkes County and their regional neighbors in order to trace James JarvisÕs origins. Surnames appearing in this work are too numerous to list but include maternal lines of the various Jarvis tribes as well as their neighbors. Both ancestors and descendants of the 1785 population are mentioned in the notes, in some cases covering a period from the early 1700s into the first half of the 19th century. Under the index heading ÒEnslaved,Ó given names are grouped according to the surname of slaveholding families.
