A comfortable, throw-on cape.

There's no real 'front' to the Inklines cape—there's a different part of design on each side.

In fact...you can also wear the cape with the 'sides' to the front and back! This gives quite a different neckline. The pattern is interesting at the edges, and accentuated if worn in this style (see sunrise yellow colourway images).

Pre-orders

Where indicated on the colourways, this piece is available to pre-order. We make up the garment especially for you and aim to dispatch it within eight weeks of your order. Find full information here.

Design

In the Inklines cape, the block section of pattern is derived from the outline of the archaeological dig site at Ness of Brodgar, Orkney.

Sizing & fit

One size

  • A (neck): 32cm
  • B (neck to longest point): 63cm
  • C (width at widest point): 84cm

Can be worn either way around, with a different part of design on each side.  Hangs lower and slightly larger than the ebbstanes cape. Pattern is interesting at the edges and is accentuated if worn side on.

All knitwear is individually made, so measurements given are approximate.

Materials

  • 100% extra-fine merino wool (Oeko-Tex Standard 100)

Manufacture

We are committed to sustaining and being part of UK knitwear manufacturing – and Shetland’s place in this.

  • We design Nielanell knitwear in our Hoswick studio, with initial concepts carefully translated into the flat panels needed to make up each piece.
  • Currently, for this garment, we are working with specialist knitters in Mainland UK to make these panels.
  • The garment itself is made in Shetland. Our in-house team in Hoswick transforms the flat panels into a wearable piece of knitwear using linking (a skilled knitting process) and hand-finishing.
  • Our knitwear is made in very small batches, slowly. Each piece of Nielanell knitwear can take approximately 12-16 weeks (often longer) from weighing out the yarn needed in our studio to the garment being ready to wear.

Inspiration and design process: drawing time in knitwear

The Inklines textile design is taken from an ink drawing of time, inspired by a visit to the archaeological excavations at Ness of Brodgar, Orkney.

Working out the interaction between pattern and garment shape, with a card viewer stuck onto the screen!

A simple, inked 'timeline' has been developed to create a pattern of overlapping shapes and negative space—a response to the term deep time.

Perfect Repair
Color: Cherry, Size: 2.4"x 15ft
We purchased a used secretary with hutch, and it had some damage on the veneered decoration on the hutch doors. I discovered this product and ordered the closest match I could find. It was easy to cut to fit and the price was amazing. It looks so good that you could not easily find the repair and I am very happy.

Professional look overall
Color: Birch, Size: 1/2"x 25ft
Installing the edging worked best with a heat gun vs a blow dryer, Adhesive was average, some areas adhered well while some spots kept lifting. The areas where the edging is connected to create the continuous link are very visible and will not blend well when painted. I had more waste by trying to avoid these sections. The edging is easy to cut. I used 220 sand paper to blend the areas where the edging was too wide for the project edge after trimming. Be careful not to over sand the edging. I found both the 1/2 in and 3/4 in are both wider than 1/2 in and 3/4 in plywood. Expect extra time to trim the excess. The edging is flexible and easy to use when working with curved edges. Overall, the edging still gave my projects a professional look.
