Description

Hojicha Powder "Amber" | Roasted Japanese Green Tea PowderHojicha Powder "Amber" is a lightly roasted Japanese green tea powder from Shizuoka. Most hojicha is made from bancha leaves or stems and roasted deep for a heavier, caramel driven profile. Amber sits at the lighter end, with a cleaner, gentler roast. This is the powder we use for our hojicha lattes at the Tea Bar. The name refers to its lighter amber colour; deeper roasts go redder. How does it taste Light roast with toasted rice and sesame aromas.

Hojicha Powder "Amber" is a lightly-roasted Japanese green tea powder from Shizuoka. Most hojicha is made from bancha leaves or stems and roasted deep for a heavier, caramel-driven profile. Amber sits at the lighter end, with a cleaner, gentler roast.

This is the powder we use for our hojicha lattes at the Tea Bar. The name refers to its lighter amber colour; deeper roasts go redder.

How does it taste

Light roast with toasted-rice and sesame aromas. The sweetness is clean and gentle. In a latte, it's lighter and less chocolatey than deep-roasted hojicha.

Tea profile

  • Flavour: Light roast, toasted rice, hint of sesame, clean sweetness
  • Origin: Shizuoka, Japan
  • Cultivar: Yabukita
  • Harvest: First-flush (early-season picking)
  • Type: Lightly-roasted green tea, finely milled to powder
  • Caffeine: Low
  • TCM property: Warm (温性). The roast shifts the tea's character from cooling (like matcha) toward warming
  • Best for: Straight hojicha, hojicha lattes, iced hojicha
  • Size: 50g tin (around 20–25 servings depending on preparation)

Preparation

Hojicha latte:

  1. Sift 2–3g of hojicha powder into a bowl
  2. Add 30ml of 80°C water and work into a smooth paste with a bamboo whisk
  3. Warm 150–200ml of your preferred milk and pour into the paste
  4. Sweetener optional. A little honey or sugar gives the drink more body and a rounder flavour

Iced hojicha latte:

  1. Sift 2–3g of hojicha powder into a bowl
  2. Add 30ml of water and work into a paste with a bamboo whisk
  3. Add a few ice cubes to the bowl
  4. Pour in 150–200ml of cold milk. Sweeten if you like

Straight hojicha: For a lighter cup without milk, sift 1–2g of hojicha powder into a bowl, add 120–150ml of 80°C water, and whisk until smooth.

Joanne's notes

For a lot of our customers, hojicha is the tea they remember most from a trip to Japan. Matcha gets the spotlight, but hojicha is the one most people fall for on the first sip. The dry powder smells almost like coffee at first; once brewed, it's a warming cup that doesn't keep most people up at night.

Available at our Salamanca Tea Bar in Hobart. Come in and try a latte before committing to the tin.

What you'll need

A small hand-whisk or milk frother works well for lattes. A bamboo chasen also works (the same tool you'd use for matcha).

Storage

Keep the tin sealed in a cool, dry place, away from strong odours.

About hojicha

Hojicha (焙じ茶) is Japanese green tea that's been roasted after processing, which turns the leaves from green to a warm amber or reddish-brown depending on roast depth. The roasting converts grassy notes into toasted, nutty ones, with the depth of caramel and chocolate growing as the roast goes darker. Most hojicha is made from lower-grade sencha, bancha, or kukicha stems, which is what makes Amber unusual: it uses first-flush leaves.

Not an average-to-large person's chair by any means.
Color: Brown, Number of Items: 1
PROS: Comfortable seat cushion Feels sturdy and manufactured well Swivels and rolls effortlessly Height adjustment Not terribly heavy Easy assembly CONS: Reclining feature is not great Back cushion forces a very upright sitting posture Pleather material will deteriorate within a couple years It's overpriced for what it is, even at $100. SUMMARY: I'm a little guy. 5'7 and 145 lbs. This chair feels like it was scaled for me and my little frame. Now, while that's perfect for me, nearly everyone else I know or have ever known, are at least twice my size. And I can't imagine them finding the overall size of this thing to be enough chair for them. Maybe I'm way off base here, but I've sat in regular sized office chairs and while they'd swallow me, they're essentially perfect sized for most other people. Feels good to sit in, nothing amazing but it's comfortable enough. Remember, it's made with pleather. Every day use for long periods of time will wear the material out within two or three years. Won't effect it's performance but it will be ugly with cracks and wear/tear far quicker than real leather, of course. It looks very nice right out the box though. Not too heavy either. The reclining feature is a bummer, it's like you really have to force it to lean back, like it's fighting against your doing so. Which if your trying to lean back, you know putting a bunch of effort into your legs is the opposite of what you're trying to achieve - which is relax without tension in any part of your body. It's basically useless for my needs, anyway. The price, even at a measly $100 for an "executive office chair" does not reflect the hiccups with this thing because it's not a one size fits all kind of chair. Anyone over 180 lbs and 5'10 will surely find it to be a bit snug and the back cushion to sit a bit short. The back forces you to sit very upright. Something that will take getting used to, especially since I can't recline. This chair is kinda "meh" to be completely honest. I'll spend at least twice as much next time and get five times the quality. Look, it'll do the job for a while but there really isn't anything very impressive about it besides what it visually looks like. I've no idea how so many people rated this thing with so many glowing reviews. There's not a lot to boast about with a cheap $100 pleather chair that's undersized for most people. I really don't get it. I'd only recommend this at $65-$70. No way this is worth the $100 Amazon is currently pricing it at. Spend just a little a bit more, you'll notice a huge jump in quality over this.

Just Great!
Color: Beige, Number of Items: 1
Comfortable. Wheels roll very well. Great padding. Seems durable. Assembly is the standard with such chairs, takes about 15 minuttes. Do not know how long the PL? leather fabric will last? Probably wear in a couple of years. But for the price, this is perfect. UPDATE: After 2 1/2 months, seat feels flat and very uncomfortable.

Modern and comfortable, easy to assemble
Color: White, Color: White
Reliable chair with solid quality. Assembly took about 35 mins following the clear instruction sheet. Chair can hold at least 220 lbs, stable and easy to move. Wheels can move in multiple directions. Seat heights and arm are both adjustable. No stain or scratches on the padding surface. White finish looks clean and modern.

Impressive Chair for the price!
Color: Black
Purchased for my mother, she absolutely loves it. She used a secretary style chair forever and said she didn't want a big bulky chair like the executive type until she saw this one. It's comfortable like an executive chair but not quite a big or cumbersome as the executive can be. It took a hot minute to put together but well worth it. Instructions were very clear and easy, I'm in my 60's, if I can put it together anybody can! Chair is well made, solid!

Easy to assemble. Fairly comfortable for the price. although I thought that the seat cushion would be more soft. overall I'm satisfied.
