Our Hearts Beat the Same is a heartfelt story based upon a real student that Lindsay Wheland, MS, taught when she was an elementary teacher at Mayfield Elementary School. This story brings to life a child with autism who was mainstreamed into a first-grade classroom. It highlights his (and his family’s) struggles to be accepted and understood. This child taught Lindsay a huge lesson about acceptance and tolerance. It also demonstrates how all children are different and special in their own way and deserve the chance to shine in their environment. Another important lesson this book offers is how all children can develop understanding and acceptance if fostered by adults in their environment. It is meant to teach children how to love others and see past the physical and/or mental disabilities.

About the Author

Lindsay Wheland spent her life in education. Her passion is helping children to become the most well-rounded individuals they can. She spent 19 years as an elementary educator in grades K-3. She was an assistant principal for 2 years and an elementary principal for 3 years. Her current position is a school improvement coordinator helping at-risk schools to improve student achievement.

Lindsay has 2 amazing children: Peyton Lynn (female), 9th grader; and Tye Patrick (male), 6th grader. These two wonderful humans have taught her so much about life, diversity, and the pursuit of happiness. Lindsay also enjoys writing, spending time with her family, and many outdoor activities. She dreams of a world of acceptance where children can feel comfortable in their own skin, while seeking opportunities for growth and success!

I made an extra effort not to over-charge it when I got the second one, so when it died again after another ~5 months, I pivoted to trying a different product. Maybe it would work better for someone not using it so often, because aside from longevity, it was a handy little tool. I had previously bought packing bags in a store — the kind the you had to seal and then roll/squish the air out of one end of the bag. It really took 2 people to remove most of the air. I took them to Mexico, and they were just OK. I switched to these vacuum bags before our family ski trip. What a great purchase! This set includes multiple sizes, which worked well for both everyday clothes and bulkier cold-weather gear. They also fit well inside different size suitcases. One tip: Fill the bag, seal it shut, squish some air out, but then suck the final air out with the bag already inside your suitcase. You can "massage" the clothes and guide how the bag flattens out for a really efficient use of your suitcase space. The organization you can achieve is really impressive. The bag material and valve is tough enough to not allow any air leaks. The red "glides" they provide make sure the seal is solid and easy to achieve. And the system is simple enough that I suspect that elementary kids or people with lower dexterity could operate it (my teens certainly had no issues packing themselves). After returning home, I folded all the bag along their original fold lines, charged up the "sucky thing" (which still held 75% of it's charge after being used at least 20 times), and tucked it all neatly in our travel drawer, ready for our international trip next month. Great value. High quality. I'd even go so far as to say they're fun to use.
