The little-known story of an eighteenth-century Quaker dwarf who fiercely attacked slavery and imagined a new, more humane way of life

In The Fearless Benjamin Lay, renowned historian Marcus Rediker chronicles the transatlantic life and times of a singular man--a Quaker dwarf who demanded the total, unconditional emancipation of all enslaved Africans around the world. Mocked and scorned by his contemporaries, Lay was unflinching in his opposition to slavery, often performing colorful guerrilla theater to shame slave masters, insisting that human bondage violated the fundamental principles of Christianity. He drew on his ideals to create a revolutionary way of life, one that embodied the proclamation "no justice, no peace."

Lay was born in 1682 in Essex, England. His philosophies, employments, and places of residence--spanning England, Barbados, Philadelphia, and the open seas--were markedly diverse over the course of his life. He worked as a shepherd, glove maker, sailor, and bookseller. His worldview was an astonishing combination of Quakerism, vegetarianism, animal rights, opposition to the death penalty, and abolitionism.

While in Abington, Philadelphia, Lay lived in a cave-like dwelling surrounded by a library of two hundred books, and it was in this unconventional abode where he penned a fiery and controversial book against bondage, which Benjamin Franklin published in 1738. Always in motion and ever confrontational, Lay maintained throughout his life a steadfast opposition to slavery and a fierce determination to make his fellow Quakers denounce it, which they finally began to do toward the end of his life.

With passion and historical rigor, Rediker situates Lay as a man who fervently embodied the ideals of democracy and equality as he practiced a unique concoction of radicalism nearly three hundred years ago. Rediker resurrects this forceful and prescient visionary, who speaks to us across the ages and whose innovative approach to activism is a gift, transforming how we consider the past and how we might imagine the future.

Holy Grail
Color: White, Size: King
Holy Moly!!!! Ummm where do I begin?? Let’s start with how soft and delicious these sheets are right out of the package. I literally had 2 day old sheets on my bed and I couldn’t wait to wash these sheets and put them on my bed. I’m normally a percale sheet lover but even 2 years in, they are too stiff for me. I have other Bedsure products so I decided to buy these bamboo sheets and I’m so happy I did. The quality is unmatched, they are cooling, soft and very very comfortable to sleep on. They fit my mattress amazingly, even with a mattress topper and protector on it. They do take a long time to dry on low, per the instructions, but chat GPT assured me that it’s actually a good thing because the materials are high quality when they take awhile to dry on low. The last 10 mins, I did bump the heat up to medium and watched closely and took them out immediately and there were zero wrinkles. Chat GPT also said no fabric softeners or dryer sheets to preserve the fabric with no pilling and to keep the cooling effect that the bamboo offers so keep that in mind. I’m obsessed with every single product this company makes and these sheets are no different!!! The price is amazing for the quality too!!

Best sheets
Color: White, Size: Queen
I have bought, like many, at least 2 sheet sets per year, either because of substandard quality or by not meeting "Cooling" promises. I learned along time ago that "You get what you pay for" especially with sheets. All the Ross, Marshalls and Burlington sets that look to be great deals because they have to be,? they're at discounters and sure to be half of what they normally sell for, right?? I took a chance when I noticed these for $139 (Queen, 1 year ago). I had a set of the Maloufs Rayon from Bamboo queen sheets that I adored, $159, but after just a dozen or so washings they literally got holes in them. I trim my toe nails so that I don't punture the sheets, had to learn that the hard way. Malouf said that my top loading wash machine was adding to the issue!!! I don't walk around with any holes in my wardrobe and I wash everything in the same unit. Any way, I took that chance and these are the BEST sheets I have ever purchased, period. I ended up with a hole in one set and Bedsure provided me a hefty discount/refund on my next set. These are very smooth so if you are sensitive to the feel of certain materials, you will be very happy. They don't have that cheap Microfiber Sheen that you get with other sets in this price range. They keep me very cool, and I'm a true hot body. Buy these and I assure you that, for the money, I don't believe there exists anything better... Enjoy

Good quality sheets
Color: White, Size: King
Really lovely sheets! Just the right thickness, not scratchy and fit our deep mattress. Have washed these a few times now and they get softer. No pilling thus far. Great buy!

Wrinkle easy
Color: White, Size: Queen
These are so comfy and cooling I love it. Such a luxurious feel. But they wrinkle so bad. I think it’s the rayon, but that’s what makes it so comfortable. If you’re willing to iron sheets or are ok with the wrinkles these are perfect!

Cool to the touch
Color: Sage Green, Size: King
These sheets are nice but in my opinion they aren’t worth more than $100. Side note, finding goose down inserts are challenging to find in the 20x40 pillow case they provide. So keep that in mind. The goose down pillow size I’m most commonly seeing for a king size bed are usually 18x36. That is more my fault for not double checking. They do feel cool to the touch which I do appreciate.
