"His book shows scholarly knowledge on every page. But it is written with relish, with urbanity, with the vividness that belongs to an eye which has become accustomed to a very strange and very interesting landscape." -- Padraic Colum, New Republic.Although the origins of the unicorn legend are shrouded in the mists of early history, the myth has persisted for over 2,000 years and its symbolic and allegorical meanings have remained potent in art and literature to the present day. Unicorns are mentioned in the Old Testament, by Greek and Roman authors, in the literature of medieval Christianity, as well as in the cultures of Islam and China.
In this erudite, urbane, and highly readable book, a noted scholar traces the development of all the various aspects of the unicorn legend in mythology, folklore, magic, medicine, literature, art, and commerce. The first written reference to a unicorn (c. 400 B.C.) is by the Greek physician Ctesias, referring to the wild ass of India, to which he attributed (erroneously) a single horn in the middle of the forehead. The horn, ground into a powder or made into a drinking vessel, was reputed to prevent epilepsy and to protect against poisoning. Subsequent Greek and Roman writers, including Aristotle and the elder Pliny, also mention the Indian wild ass and describe it as a single-horned animal. In the Christendom of the Middle Ages, the unicorn came to serve as an allegory for the incarnation and death of Christ.
These and many other threads of the unicorn legend are woven together here in an engrossing tapestry of fact and fiction that will delight anyone interested in this strange and enduring fable. Twenty-eight carefully selected illustrations complement the text.
"It is a book rich with curious lore, the product ... of careful and intensive research; yet it is written with charm and with affection for the elusive animal which for millenniums has entranced men's imaginations." -- Books.

Great, soft, high-quality pillows, but too thick for me
Size: Standard (Pack of 2), Style: Soft, Configuration: Pillow
This will be a brief review of my pillow journey. I tried a few of the most popular pillows, like MyPillow, Amazon Basics, bamboo/shredded foam, memory pillows, but my most common complaint about them were that they were all just too high and firm for me. I am a restless sleeper and alternate between back, side, and stomach sleeping, and I strongly preferred the stomach sleeper/flat pillows with a polyester fiber/down alternative filling.
Here's a ranking of my 4 top pillows:
Eversnug Adjustable Layer Pillows - (#1)
These were THE pillow for me. I had never heard of these pillows or the company, but I really like being able to adjust my pillow. These pillows came with 2 small, 2 medium, and 2 large pillows and 2 twin zippable pillow pouches. All of them were polyester fiber filled and somewhat flat and soft, but not lumpy. The pillows may not come the exact same sizes, but they are close enough for me. These are the pillows I ultimately decided to stick with, despite being slightly more expensive than the others at $50 for a set of 2 pillows.
Nappler Bamboo Shredded Memory Foam Pillow - (#2)
Before I found the Eversnug pillows, I was trying the adjustable bamboo shredded memory foam ones. These were my go-to whenever I was testing pillows I didn't like very much. The only downside to these pillows is that if you don't add enough filling, you could feel the edges of the shredded foam. Also, the "bamboo" cover was way too warm and the inner zipper would get too easily caught.
Amazon Basics Down Alternative Pillow - (#3)
I don't think I've ever been disappointed by an Amazon Basics product yet. These pillows were soft, amazing pillows, but they were 1-2 inches too thick/firm for me.
MyPillow - (#4)
Despite all the hype around these, they were too lumpy and 1 inch too thick for me.
Like I said previously, I ended up going with the Eversnug Adjustable pillows, which I absolutely adore. A tiny bonus is that you can take the pillows you don't use and rest them on your sides or between your knees for some extra cushioning.

Good price and pretty comfortable
Size: Standard (Pack of 2), Style: Soft, Configuration: Pillow
These down alternative pillows are incredibly soft and comfortable, especially for stomach and back sleepers. The soft density gives just the right amount of support without feeling too firm or too flat. I’ve been sleeping much better since switching to these pillows, and they stay fluffy throughout the night.
I also love that they’re hypoallergenic, so there’s no irritation or overheating while sleeping. The standard size fits perfectly in my pillowcases, and the white color looks clean and fresh. Getting a 2-pack at this quality is a great value. Highly recommend for anyone looking for cozy, hotel-style pillows at an affordable price!

Comfortable Pillows
Size: Standard (Pack of 2), Style: Soft, Configuration: Pillow
These pillows have a nice soft feel and are so comfortable. They’re supportive without being too firm, so my neck feels comfortable throughout the night. They’re lightweight, fluffy, and easy to adjust for different sleeping positions. The material feels smooth and well-made, and the pillows hold their shape better than I expected for the price. They use some alternative fill instead of real feathers which is good for people with allergies.

Mid range quality
Size: Standard (Pack of 2), Style: Soft, Configuration: Pillow
They work for kids who aren’t picky. Size fit twin bedding well. Look nice and clean. Quality is mediocre. It wasn’t filled very much even after giving time for it to breathe and fluff. Kind of lumpy and lopsided.

Size: Standard (Pack of 2), Style: Soft, Configuration: Pillow
I bought these to exchange some old pillows on my son's bed and let me tell you.. they are so soft he fell asleep almost instantly! They keep him nice and cool during the night, they have kept their shape so far and they support your neck perfectly.
