Fine cane-seated chair from Brudenell House, Bucks, in the manner of Gillows.A handsome, well made chair with turned and reeded legs, a channel running round the square backrest, caned seat in excellent order, untouched since coming from a country house (see below for provenance). I've been told it's quite Gillows in style, although there's no stamp. I'm not sure of exact date so will just say 19th century, although it certainly looks and feels early, and caned seats became popular at the end of the 18th century. Evidence of

Evidence of past (well-carried out) repairs to a couple of the corners, and a small repair underneath with screws - see photos - but no wobbles or movement to the chair.

Brudenell House is a large, beautiful Grade II listed country house and was originally built in the sixteenth century and then added to in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Until 1962 it was the church rectory in Quainton. It was then bought by my oldest friend Julian's grandmother (Helena Wright, pioneer of birth control and family planning) and then passed down to her son, Beric, in 1982, when I first met Julian in our early teens.
I lived down the road in a very busy house, so I spent many hours and days escaping to Brudenell House!
After Beric passed away in 2008, the family finally sold Brudenell House in 2011 in order to downsize to a more manageable house.
