The tracker knife is one of the most capable survival blades ever designed, built on the idea that a single tool should do the work of many. Its multi-section blade, a forward chopping edge, a central cutting belly, and a reinforced spine was shaped by the real needs of trackers and bushcrafters far from any toolbox. Popularized through wilderness survival traditions, it became the benchmark for a true do-it-all field blade.

From those rugged roots, the tracker grew into a favorite among survivalists, hunters, and collectors who value function over flash. Forged in Damascus steel and fitted with a sawback spine, it pairs centuries-old pattern-welding with hard-use field design. The Voyager Vanguard carries that heritage forward, a bold, modern tracker built to be relied on when it counts.

Introduction

The Voyager Vanguard is a handmade Damascus tracker knife built for serious survival and outdoor work. Its 12-inch sawback blade combines a forward chopping section, a cutting belly, and a toothed spine for notching and rough cuts three tools in one. A sleek black resin handle and matching sheath give it a tough, tactical look to match its capability.

Full-tang construction runs the blade steel through the entire handle for maximum strength and balance. It belongs to our survival knives collection, where each blade is hand-forged and finished so no two are exactly alike. For a wood-handled option, the Damascus Tracker Knife with Pakka Wood makes a great companion.

Blade

The 12-inch blade is forged from genuine pattern-welded Damascus steel, its flowing layered pattern a structural result of folding and forging the steel rather than a surface etching. The tracker geometry divides the edge into purpose-built sections: a robust forward edge for chopping and batoning, a curved belly for slicing and skinning, and a sawback spine for notching and rough work. It's a true multi-purpose survival blade built for hard use.

Handle

The handle is crafted from durable black resin a tough, moisture-resistant material that delivers a secure grip in wet or dry conditions and stands up to demanding field use. Its sleek, tactical look complements the Damascus blade, while the full-tang construction keeps the blade's strength running end to end. Comfortable and confident in hand, it locks in control during chopping, carving, and survival tasks.

Uses

This tracker is a true one-knife field kit: chopping kindling and branches, batoning, carving camp tools, notching for traps and shelters, skinning and processing game, and general bushcraft and survival work. Its multi-section blade handles tasks that would normally need a hatchet, knife, and saw combined. Always handle and store it responsibly, and check your local regulations regarding tracker-style knives before carrying one.

Care Instructions

Damascus steel rewards simple, regular care. Hand-wash and dry the blade immediately after every use never put it in a dishwasher. Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil after cleaning to protect the steel from rust and keep the pattern crisp. Store the knife in its sheath away from humidity, and sharpen each blade section to its purpose using a stone for the edge and a round file for the sawback as needed.

FAQs

What is the multi-section blade design of this Damascus tracker knife?

The Voyager Vanguard uses the classic tracker layout: a forward chopping edge, a central cutting belly, and a sawback spine for notching. This lets one 12-inch Damascus blade do the work of several tools, making it a versatile, do-it-all survival knife for the field.

Why does this Damascus tracker knife have a sawback spine on the blade?

The sawback spine adds rough-cutting capability for notching, scoring, and shaping wood during trap and shelter building. Combined with the chopping edge and cutting belly, it lets the tracker handle a wide range of survival tasks with a single blade, which is what makes the design so versatile.

Is the black resin handle durable enough for hard survival and field use?

Yes. Black resin is tough, moisture-resistant, and comfortable in hand, giving a secure grip in wet or dry conditions. Combined with the full-tang construction running end to end, the handle easily withstands hard chopping, batoning, and survival use without weakening.

Does this handmade Damascus tracker knife come with a sheath included?

Yes. The Voyager Vanguard ships with a fitted sheath that covers its wide tracker blade. It protects the Damascus edge and sawback spine from moisture and impact while keeping the knife secure and ready to carry on your belt or in your pack during any outdoor trip.

How do I care for the Damascus blade and sawback spine to prevent rust?

Hand-wash and dry the blade right after use, then apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil. Store it in the sheath away from humidity, and avoid dishwashers and prolonged moisture. Sharpen the main edge with a stone and the sawback teeth with a round file to keep both performing.

Soothing, refreshing, and effective for most uses
I found this sunscreen back when it was still reasonable priced ($10 for a bottle this size) and am now completely 100% addicted as the price continues to rise. Sigh. I don't use this anywhere but my face and neck. Putting this on my face makes me go "ahhhhh". I break out easily, burn easily, and haaaate the feeling of sunscreen. Previously, I used Neutrogena 45 or 55+ ultra-sheer dry touch, and I still use that sometimes when I expect more intense exposure, but the Coola cucumber just feels so much better. I don't actually know if I would burn in cases where I still use my other 45+ sunscreen since I haven't taken the chance. I use Coola for 30-45 minute pool sessions, and hikes between 30-90 minutes. I haven't trusted it for things like skiing, 3 hour hikes, or boating where you get intense sun and a lot of moisture exposure. Buy if you want a lightweight, refreshing face sunscreen for walks in the sun, lounging poolside, or mild-moderate hikes.

Organic Sunscreen with an Air-Brushed Finish
I've been using the Coola Organic sunscreen on my face for about 5 years now. I love that it protects my skin without dangerous chemicals. The product has virtually no scent and has a pleasant creamy, but not greasy, texture. An additional perk is that it creates an instant "air-brushed" looking finish to my skin. Note: I have found that you have to shake the tube (especially when new) or else the product emerges a bit watery at first. I've always used the non-tinted formula so I can't comment on how the tinted formula works. Also, the "cooling" aspect of the product seems more of hype than reality. But, over all, this is an excellent sunscreen.

Worked well near the equator
Style: SPF 50
I bought this product because I was going to be in the field for a month, outside, every day, all day, in Tanzania at high altitude. A severe sunburn would be hard to treat in the remote area we were in, but also I am very careful about protecting my skin from aging. I had to have mineral based sunscreen because as a whitewater kayaker I know it’s the only truly water resistant kind and it was going to be sweaty. And since I knew I was going to be putting it on every day, and we didn’t have running water in the field (bucket showers only) I didn’t want it to feel gross. (I really wanted to try the spray but I didn’t want to put anything pressurized in my luggage.) And I had already discovered the Coola face sunscreen (30spf version) which had impressed me with how silky smooth and not greasy it is. Now this IS greasier because it is a higher SPF. BUT I think this product is as good as you’re going to get with the protection you’re getting. Like I said, I’m a white water tiger, so I have used a LOT of mineral sunscreens. This was hands down the most comfortable one I’ve used. And it was effective. I didn’t burn once—only time I did burn was when I forgot to put it on one day toward the end of the trip, when we were out for just a couple hours—and I got the first 2nd degree burn I’ve ever had in my life. That was what this stuff had protected me from, all day every day, the entire trip. I did tan a little but I think that was mostly from the few times I was not covered during short bouts or it was cloudy. For my face I used the Coola 50spf face product.
