Detachment isn’t always detrimental; sometimes you have to step outside to get a better view. Lauren Flax knows this - as a DJ, producer and songwriter, her discography is notoriously genre-defiant, consisting of an impressive array of solo tracks, collaborations, and remixes. The most recent of these - her mesmerizing take on Pale Blue’s “Breathe” - saw her experimenting with a new style of writing. “I wanted to explore that sound more,” Flax explains, “more of a synth exploration, textures with less beats.” The pared-down songwriting approach lent itself to thematic considerations as well: she’d been thinking about the repetitive nature of the life cycle - the Indian concept of Samsara - and felt a general disappointment at humanity’s lack of progress. On her new EP Out Of Reality, she washes that disappointment in lush sonic hues, stepping outside the quotidien for a new perspective.
Much of Out Of Reality’s cohesion comes from Flax’s expansive production, using simple elements to craft intricate backdrops for the questions posed by her songs. On the EP’s titular track, Alejandra Deheza (School of Seven Bells)’s crystalline vocals are woven against a delicate tapestry of arpeggiated keys, sparse percussion and haunting cello. There are moments of disillusionment and dread, too, such as the looming refrain on “I’m Gonna Get You” and the mournful “I don’t want to be stuck here” on “The Endless Knot”. They’re transported, however, out of the mundane realm of the living by Flax’s surreal, airy production. “Body Control” reflects this suspended ideal masterfully - Flax ups the tempo halfway through and then brings it back down, slowly, to its initial hypnotic pace, a celebration of a woman’s sexual agency and right to bodily autonomy.
Though its themes span beyond the scope of our current socio-political moment, Out Of Reality feels, right now, like an especially tantalizing proposition. Pandemic-driven escapism has bred a new crop of otherworldly music designed to transport the listener somewhere better. But Flax isn’t interested in escapism for its own sake - there’s still work to be done here on Earth, after all. Instead, through a combination of live instrumentation and ethereal synths, Out Of Reality grants us a respite from the real so we can return to it with a clear head.

My dog loves these
Size: 9 inch (Pack of 1), Style: Bone
My dog usually doesn’t play with toys but I decided to try this one. She loved it so much that I ordered 3 more to have on hand! Some of the stitching on the first one is coming apart but it’s actually quite durable given how tough she is on it.

Tail came off right away
Size: 6 inch (Pack of 1), Style: Rabbit
Our little dog kept stealing a stuffed animal off our granddaughter's bed, so I decided to get one that was better suited to him. I liked that there weren't any eyes to pull off, although it does look weird without eyes. He really likes it and carries it around. The bad part is the tail came off almost immediately. He isn't one to chew up toys, so I just don't think it was attached firmly. I haven't tried to put it back on. I may just leave it off. So far the rest of the bunny is holding up.

Comfy slippers!
Size: 7.5 inch (Pack of 1), Style: Slipper, Size: 7.5 inch (Pack of 1), Style: Slipper
My dog eats a lot of things she shouldn’t but she hasn’t eaten the slipper yet. She loves the slipper almost as much as she loves rocks. Rocks are forbidden so we’ve convinced her the slipper is just as forbidden so she holds the slipper in her mouth instead of rocks when we’re on our walks. It’s very soft and it makes for a great hat to cover her snoot indoors. We’ve replaced the first slipper because she likes destroying the squeakers. She hasn’t been able to rip it out the squeaker or tear the slipper, but she isn’t too big on ripping things open unless they’re loaded with fluff. I guess we have a pair of slippers now.

This $6 toy cost more than $1 per minute.
Size: 9 inch (Pack of 1), Style: Bone, Size: 9 inch (Pack of 1), Style: Bone
For while it lasted, this toy was very fun for my 6 month old puppy! She had fun tossing it in the air and chasing it when it landed! Unfortunately, it was not very durable. The chewability is low. She had this toy for less than five minutes and I saw the polyester fill stuffing sticking out of her mouth. I have no issue with the size nor the color as they were as described. This is definitely not a good value for your money. On a side note, Ceci is not a destructive pup. She has toys from the day I brought her home four months ago that she has not torn up nor destroyed. She has $4 toys from a big box store that remain in tact to this day as well.

Not for aggressive chewers!
Size: 9 inch (Pack of 1), Style: Bone
I purchased two of these for my 10 month old Chug puppy. She very easily tore through the fleece and got to the poly fill stuffing...it barely lasted an hour. It may be great as a cuddle buddy for younger and low-enery pups, but I would not recommend for aggressive chewers.
