Founded in 1190 during the siege of Acre, the Teutonic Knights became a military order in 1198, recruiting exclusively from German nobility. Their most celebrated campaigns were fought in the frozen wastes and marshes of Eastern Europe, where they waged a relentless war against the Pagan Prussian tribes from 1230 to 1288, carving out the Ordensstaat under Papal blessing. Clad in full mail with lance, sword, shield, and extraordinary crested helms, the Teutonic Knight was among the most formidable warriors of the medieval world.
