The turned figure in my painting withholds identity. She is visible—illuminated, present, undeniable against the bold, hot pink, background in the painting; yet the absence of her face, conveys a disconnect between being seen and being truly recognised. I wanted the hot pink to feel like noise in a world that is loud, busy, and attention-grabbing, while she remains turned away, her voice implied but not received. The purple tones of her skin carry emotion beneath the surface: thought, feeling, and depth—everything that often goes unheard. She holds something important, but the space around her doesn’t pause long enough to listen. There’s a quiet resistance in her posture: whe isn’t performing or demanding attention, she simply is. Presence should be enough to be acknowledged, yet so often it isn’t, so its lack of recognition becomes less about absence and more about being overlooked in plain sight—a powerful reflection on how voices today can exist clearly, thoughtfully, and even beautifully, yet still not be acted upon.

About the artist.

Fran Melton is an artist who seeks to inspire others through her use of colours, bringing a sense of peace and connection to people and nature. Her watercolor paintings focus on fresh vibrancy and simplicity, utilizing strong, bold colors to convey powerful messages. Fran’s work favours exploration of the feminine form. Her pieces evoke a deep sense of beauty and balance with the viewer, and she likes to create a sense of fun and delight with her more colourful artworks. Fran’s work has been sold at several exhibitions and Galleries in Brisbane, including Recovered Futures 2024, 2025 and 2026 and past Plant Empire group exhibitions.

This item is part of the Plant Empire Small Wonders Exhibition 2026, on display from 9 May - 7 June. Exhibition items are available for sale in person or online.
